RyneB Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I'm sure his $30 reel is still better than a Curado 2
Capt.Bob Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I have two Shakespeare baitcasting reels that cost me $12 and $15 over a decade ago that still function today and there quality is no were near this one. They might be two decades old. I'm very impressed with the workmanship inside this reel. As soon as my new rods get here I'll hammer it with spinnerbaits and well see the bass beat it up too. I notice the bass will tear it up if it's not a quality product. I seen this with other spinning reels. If your just getting into baitcasting and not sure if you will like it or not why not buy an affordable reel at first? That's why I purchased the shakespear reels first. I also have a newer Mitchell broadcaster too that cost me much more. I do have a super sized baitcaster setup with a larger quantum reel on it too. It's more for pike. I use baitcasters for spinnerbaits and jig n pigs mainly. Since I got away from the cheap low dollar borderline spinning reels I haven't had a problem with them. The Wal-Mart quantum, the vivas, the okumas, the finors and the pleugers all serve me well. My D.A.M. Quick spinning reels from the 70's still are like new today. These were top of the line back then. These were my trout setups. I do maintenance on every reel so if it fails it's not a lube problem The cheap spinning reels were like $5 new. They were ultra light setups. They were good for trout but once the bass hit 3lbs they tore these reels up. Go figure. I figured using an ultra light setup for bass would be fun but the bass didn't agree. The drags and spool bearings were toast. These were name brand reels too I contacted the manufacturer and they sent me new reels but there on the shelf to remind me. I have to say this isn't telling much. I have used 1000 size Stradics on Lake Erie for years, one is a Stradic 1000MgFB and with 8LBS. Braid I have caught so many sheaphead over 6 or 7 pounds it waw rediculous, catfish over that same weight, all while Perch fishing, last year at Dale Hollow on a Crappie trip an 8 1/2 pound Blue Cat on the same reel, countless Walleyes over 1 to 10 LBS. and this little rig with a Loomis 6' LF rod that I still use today like new. Catching to 5 pound bass on any reel should be expected to last forever. Maybe a bearing change on the line roller now and then, or a drag washer set sometime. I have found in these conditions every other brand has given out in less than a season with some, and none made three years without issues, and pitched. Bigger reels get the real test, fish to 20 pounds and boulder ridden raging rivers with stout no give Braid,,,,,, the ones I own today hold up to this year after year, bring those buble pack reels wally world sell's on, I hate to be honest, but you get what you pay for,,,, been that way for 60 years in my experience!
Khong Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 This is all I have to say, "When you meet up with Mr. Largmouth who weight in at 6-10lb, let us know if you didn't feel bad that you should have bought the real thing." I hope that knock off serves it's true intention.

I can agree to a point on that but the easiest way too turn off a new angler who always casts a spinning reel. Is to have him buy a cheap junk bait cast reel. You don't have to spend 100's of dollars on one but there are good reels for $100.00 or so. When an angler uses a good quality baitcast reel the learning curve is so much easier when switching over from a spinning reel. I'm not saying that's what the reel is you bought because no one knows yet until it's tested over a few months.
Super User tomustang Posted August 16, 2013 Super User Posted August 16, 2013 Still no photo? Haven't even used it yet?..
Super User bigbill Posted August 16, 2013 Author Super User Posted August 16, 2013 I started out with a $12 Shakespeare baitcaster.
Super User tomustang Posted August 16, 2013 Super User Posted August 16, 2013 Still no photo? Haven't even used it yet?.. Stock photos mean nothing, that's like seeing a fast food commercial and expecting the same thing when you order. 2
JunkYard814 Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 I don't understand why you are defending this thing to the death without even using it? Would you buy a tire for your car that cost only $1.40? Probably not. I understand the saving money part, but don't get annoyed that we are skeptical. Basic principles of economics on quality and market value show that if the reel was really a top notch reel, you'd be paying a lot more than $2.00 for it. Back when I was in college, I used to buy and sell what a website called "authentic" sports jerseys. I was paying $20 for jerseys from China that should have cost over $200. They looked the real deal, but after a few times of wearing them, they began to fall apart. They worked for me because I was a college kid on a budget, but I would never go to a website filled with authentic jersey collectors pushing them to be an equal product for 10% of the price. 1
Loop_Dad Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 bigbill I hope these reels last for you. I really do. I would have bought it and tried out if it was really $1.40. But shipping being $29, it is not really $1.40. I personally feel these tactics of cheep item with high s/h unethical and refuse to buy from seller like that. Also where it is made is one thing, but which company oversees is another. Things like reels, the quality control matters a lot.
Super User rockchalk06 Posted August 16, 2013 Super User Posted August 16, 2013 Anyone who is thinking of starting out using a baitcaster and buys some POS special will be turned off in a second. I know I was. My first one lasted a whole 3 days and I gave up. It wasn't until 3 years later that I finally took the advise of a seasoned fisherman, purchased something worth crap and got back into it.
Super User SirSnookalot Posted August 16, 2013 Super User Posted August 16, 2013 I think a review of a reel is before it's used is worthless, but just as worthless is the skepticism placed on a product from those that haven't seen it or used it. I'm neither pro nor con on this particular item and as with most items I don't take a review too serious until it's been in service for quite a while. I don't use b/c but I do use spinning, I own bubble pack reels in some smaller sizes as well as more expensive larger reels. In fairness my less expensive reels don't get the stress put on them, they have lasted for years with no issues, I catch bass and peacocks in a freshwater environment. I can't make the same claim with my more expensive reels, the conditions are much harsher and the fish are a bit different, I've yet to own one that hasn't needed some kind of repair. There are certain brands and models that are not too popular here because of that durability factor. Personally I highly doubt I'd ever spend over 75 bucks for freshwater spinning reel again, I think saharas come in a bubble pack and it's more than adequate for bass and peacocks. 1
Super User *Hootie Posted August 16, 2013 Super User Posted August 16, 2013 Bigbill, looks like this is one purchase you should have kept to yourself. It's driving everyone crazy. Next time you find something you think is a great deal, PM me, and tell me about it, and I'll be happy with you and for you. As far as everyone else....well, good luck with that....lol Hootie 1
gravestone Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 Big difference in Chinese made reels and Japanese made reels. Chinese don't have the same tooling to make the same exact reel that was made in japan prior to made in china. It's been my experience that the Chinese reels are inferior. I personally boycott ANYTHING made in china ,I would rather do without than by Chinese. 1

Sometimes we don't get what we pay for too. I think this is a exact copy of a higher priced reel or they were manufacturing it for a big name company and they deceided to branch out on there own. It does look like the garcia exactly. Let's face it were teaching them about manufacturing. I build five cnc lathes that went to China so they do have our technology in manufacturing. Who knows what else they have. Keep in mind they do have bare foot doctors on bicycles who cure cancer. Where does that leave us?
rubba bubba Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 Do they have it in Lefty? I'll be a guinea pig and test one out.

But Most of America has married the thought ,,,,,,,,if I can buy 3 or 4 and they last as long as one of this (whatever it is) I will, forget real quality!!!! It's been a while since I encouraged anyone to buy a zebco 33 also though, another fine old reel!!!
Kevin22 Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 LETS GET ONE THING STRAIGHT. THIS WAS NOT A $1.40 REEL. IT WAS A $30 REEL. The seller listed it at $1.40 + $30 shipping to avoid ebay fees. It costs them MAYBE $3 to ship it to you. This is NOT a $1.40 reel, it is a $30 reel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1
Kevin22 Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 Admit it, you guys are all jealous and upset because he could have just bought a reel for $30 that rivals your $190 reel and you don't like that. Quit telling him it is junk if you have never seen one in person. God, that is freaking stupid to put somebody down when you don't even know what you are talking about. 1

Super User bigbill Posted August 16, 2013 Author Super User Posted August 16, 2013 I'd never spend $200 for a fishing reel. What's the difference In the wind going by us on a $200 1972 Suzuki TS 185 dual sport vs. a new 2013 $25k Harley? Nothing but bragging rights that someone spent $25k. The difference is someone is $24,800 richer. Plus the Suzuki is more dependable. So where does the higher cost really factor in? I was all alone at over 100 mph except for the other rockets on my 1200 bandit. It cost me 6k at the time so does its low cost mean it's junk? I rode this bike for 25,000 miles the first year I had it and never had a problem. I sold it three years later because of health problems I got ill. They do offer this reel in left and right hand cranks. I ordered both the second one is due here soon. To each his own.

I think life experience warns us that "If it's too good to be true, it probably isn't." I don't like stuff for $19.99 plus S&H either, especially if you get two or three by calling in the next 10 minutes. And lastly, I don't want ANYTHING free, it usually ends up costing way too much! 1
Super User tomustang Posted August 16, 2013 Super User Posted August 16, 2013 I spend my money on quality gear and I'm suppose to be jealous? That will be the day.
Kevin22 Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 I just do not understand how someone could put someone else down by telling him the reel he bought is crap, or won't hold up, or was not worth the money when they have never been within a mile of one and probably never even heard of them until this post came up. I hope when newbies are asking questions those type of people who have never tried the products arent chiming in their unfounded opinions of stuff they have never seen in person. I think some people on here just like to post and will throw their unfounded opinions out whenever they can.
