ABA CAST CHAMP 2006 Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 I am new to fishing larger (5"+) and heavier (2oz.+) swimbaits. I have a reel and rod that can handle the bait, but I was wondering about line selection. It seems like 20-30 pound test fluorocarbon or monofilament line are pretty much standard for fishing these large lures. My question is, would 20-25 pound test braid/Fireline also work well for the swimbait application? (I included the Fireline reference only because I've got a spool of it sitting in my tacklebox) Thanks everyone! Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted March 27, 2007 Super User Posted March 27, 2007 I use 25lb Pline CXX X-tra Strong exclusively. If you use braid I would advise using NO LESS than 50lb. Quote
mike bat Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 20lb-25lb p-line cxx moss green .those are my main choices ;D and i with Biz i wouldent use a braid Quote
ABA CAST CHAMP 2006 Posted March 27, 2007 Author Posted March 27, 2007 Okay, big copolymer line it is then. Let me pick your brains a moment longer and ask why the P-Line is a better match than braid with swimbaits.... Thanks er'body. Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted March 27, 2007 Super User Posted March 27, 2007 Fish Chris uses braid only and smokes them with it. Braid is very visible. I don't want a braid to leader knot thrown in the mix either. I WANT some line stretch. I fish with a buttoned down drag and I want a little shock absorption especially at boat side. I am now using braid with leader on my worm/jig rods, cranking rod, and dropshot rods, but I don't see it happening on my swimbait rods. Quote
Randall Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 I use 40 lb braid. I feel it helps me move a big swimbait in the mouth of a big fish after it clamps down on the bait and helps me horse it straight to the boat so it can't shake the bait free. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted March 28, 2007 Super User Posted March 28, 2007 I use 50/12 P-Line Spectrex IV. Why? I want the strongest line possible when dealing with big fish. I don't like using large diameter lines and braid gives good strength with smaller diameter. Quote
Supermat Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 I use 30 lb P-Line CXX for my biggest baits. For the smaller 5-7" baits I use 30 Lb P-Line CX Premium. I will NEVER use braid on my swimbaits. I understand why some people do it but I make a point to set the hook HARD!!!! After its set I want the stretch to keep from bending out the hooks when I horse the fish to the net. Quote
