Scatter Rap Spiraling On Retrieve

Guys,

I was fishing a Scatter Rap and on the retrieve it would spiral on me. Like a plane doing coils. The retrieve was moderate. Slowing it down eliminated it but it also eliminated the action.

Anyone else experience this?

Happened to me too, try taking pliers and rotating where you attach your line the opposite direction its spiraling, worked for me.

Happens to me sometimes too.  When I fish it I vary up the retrieve.  A couple fast turns, then a slow turn or 2, 3 fast turns, one slow one.  If it starts to spiral, I'll just stop reeling until the bait rights itself.  I like the idea of the Scatter Rap but sometimes it gets annoying having to put that much effort into getting it to run properly.

So long as it isn't constantly spiraling, I don't see a problem. Last time I fished one, mine would spiral on the retrieve a couple times, but I did get bit when it spiraled once that day as well. It seems to me like the bass might think the shad is trying to be evasive and go for it.

Felix, what are you casting your scatter raps with? I cant help with the spiraling situation, but I bought two scatter raps not too long ago (a bluegill and a silver) and only casted the bluegill out twice. I noticed that it was tough to cast even with 10 lb. mono on spinning gear. Id like to be able to fish with these and see if they'll produce for me, but they dont cast for anything!!

I was using 10lb braid with an 8lb Fc leader. It was the countdown model.

It's a Crapala...........toss it in the garbage and go buy a SK, Norman, Storm, Bandit, or any other lure that costs less and works better.

Yeah but Crapala wasn't always crap.  Its just what happens when companies are bought up and there are just giant conglomerates left.

Well, by your logic, Storm would be junk considering they are owned by the same company that owns Rapala. So would Blue Fox, Terminator, VMC, Sufix and Trigger X.

I guess you can have your opinion, but as many fish as Ive caught on Rapala without a single lure having a probem would already prove you wrong in saying they are "junk."

The Scatter rap wil roll if you reel too fast, but it seems to be something that may trigger a bite or two so long as its not excessive. That lip is just going to cause that to happen.

I personally throw this on 12lb flouro with a M Vendetta, and a Shimano Chronarch 201E5. I can cast the crank without much of a problem, but one cast here and there that catches the wind with cause a problem.

Generally would agree with those sentiments but the Scatter Rap is the best Rapala bait I've fished in a long time. I've given up on the DT series, I can't afford a bait that breaks that easily, but I've pulled the Scatter Rap through lots of rocks now without having a bill come loose.

I'm not a Rapala hater but the Scatter Rap does not impress me.  If they come out with a larger/heavier version for $5 I might be interested.  I have fished it quite a bit on spinning tackle and light baitcasting gear.  A Strike King KVD 1.5, Rapala Crankin' Rap (originally a Storm lure) #3 or #5 fishes as good or better everywhere I've tried the Scatter cRap.  Was that a typo?  Hahahaha.  I'm not totally bashing, with some improvements I would find it useful.

I have two and they have impressed me a lot so far. It doesnt spiral, gets bit plenty and looks good. why are you guys hating?? the clacking rap and the scatter rap are great variations to what we had as cranks before. pretty innovative if you ask me.

The lure is wood. Smack it on a dock or rocks and it will go out of tune. Make sure the front and rear hook hangers as well as the line tie are all straight. I had to bend mine straight and all was well again. This bait catches alot of fish and the shorter crank model seems to run most erratic and works best for me. Cast great with 6.5-7' spinning and braid.

X3 and I've liked most Rapala baits that I've tried. That said when I fished the bait earlier this year it seemed to perform better for me when using  8 lb mono and throwing it on a spinning rod, I did catch a few fish but the catch rate wasn't that great and the bait seemed to tempermental to justify keeping it in my box .

i havent fished the scatter rap but the only time ive seen lure spiraling is when the front treble hook is hooked onto my line

I'm not hating.  They catch fish, just not any better than lures that cast better and cost less.  In all the situations I've used them (shad and crank versions) I've yet to have them outfish any other shallow diving crankbait.   And forget the hunting BS, if you want to really get the fish chasing them deflect them off objects like you would any other bait.  The niche in my arsenal where they are best suited can be filled with lures that work more effectively for me.  I don't think I'm alone in my observations.

I've had the exact opposite experience. The first time I fished this crank, I had tried a regular square bill deflecting off cover, as well as just a shallow diver and imparting action with the rod. I went up the same stretch three times because I could make out fish cruising the shallows. I tried a spinnerbait first, no hits. Tried the shallow diver/squarebill, one hit. After remembering I had bought a couple of these on clearance at Wal-Mart, I tied one on. Went back along the same stretch and ended up catching 7 fish. Went along other shorelines and was getting bit pretty consistently.

 

I'd say it had its place that day.

Agreed on this. I haven't seen any more catches on a scatter rap -- granted, I've only thrown four different scatter raps -- then any other crank bait, and in many cases less than the traditional crankbaits in my box.

I can't comment on the scatter rap because I have not used one. But I will defend the Rapala line of baits because they have been good to me at what I consider to be a fair price. My biggest smallmouth came on a Rapala tail dancer. I have caught numerous walleye between 10-11 lbs on Rapala tail dancers & Rapala husky jerks . Rapala husky jerks have accounted for an easy 25 smallies over 6 lbs in my boat. The original floaters & husky jerks have caught numerous 10-12 lb steelhead for me. I have caught northerns over 20lbs on Rapalas. Rapalas flat out catch fish. If you do not agree that is your choice but I have picture proof that they do. Case closed. If you don't agree just ask the Linder family.
