Help Needed With Spinner Baits!

The lake I fish is like a greenish stained color. how would you fish a spinner bait  (not inline spinner) with bass tht avg a lb, are scattered and not so aggressive?(skirt colors, blade combos, and any advice greatly appreciated)

if their not being aggressive, and the stain isn't that bad, I would definately go with willow leaf blades. for color, I would say match the hatch as best you can ... if not, my go to color when their not biting so well is a pearl/blue with silver blades.

I would pick up a 3/8 white one willow one colorado blade and just start fan casting. Moderate pace with twitches every 1-2 feet. I would use a grub or split tail trailer, white as well. 

 

Havent found a place where that will not catch some fish yet.

For clear water I use a strike king mini single gold or silver single colorado blade w/ blue glimmer skirt with a white mister twister 4" split double tail grub trailer.

For Stained water it's a a strike king mini single gold colorado blade with a mister twister 4" split double tail grub trailer in chartruese.

I have noticed guys throwing large spinnerbaits with no success. My buddy told me to try a smaller one and Glenn advised me here how to set it up and use it.

Mann's makes an awesome "classic" spinner bait.

I use these in the 1/4oz size with the combination of the Indiana / Colorado blades in gold. With a blue glimmer skirt and a mister twister white 4" split double tail grub trailer for clear water. With a chartruese skirt and a mister twister 4" split double tail grub trailer.

Don't forget a trailer hook and a shot of yum shad scent.

Remember if you can see the fish they can see you. So wear darker colored clothes. I prefer camo at some places.

Using the sight line to our advantage. If you try a few casts were you can see the spinner bait than its above the sight line. Try slowing it down enough so it's out of your sight and below the sight line. Sometimes the bass are finiky and won't come up to hit it. But if it's more in there zone they will hit it. I have done this many times in stainless water.

what's ur location?

i'd dead stick a weightless soft plastic (if ya really get bored put some slow 12" drags in the mix).

master the spinnerbait in the fall. master patience and soft plastics now.

I would start with whatever color you've got that kind of matches whatever local forage there is.  Day in and day out, most of the spinner bait fish I catch happen when I am "slow rolling".

 

I know that phrase means different things to different people, here is what it means to me.  I am trying to parallel the bottom, however deep that bottom is.  ( I very seldom fish this way more than 7 or 8 feet deep, if 

the fish are deeper, I feel other presentations are better)

 

When I am slow rolling, I want to occasionally tick whatever cover/structure is on the bottom.  If I never touch anything, I am going too fast.   If I am frequently getting hung up, I am going too slow.  I generally throw half ounce spinner baits on 17 or 20 lb line.   It is a touch thing that you have to get dialed in on during any particular day.

 

I will throw a colorado/willow combination or a single spin colorado blade, but I don't think that matters a whole lot, the more stained the water the more likely I am to go with a single colorado blade, but like I said, I don't think blade style matters that much.   If the fish are on a slow rolling bite, they will hit whatever bait you present.

I fish prospect park in Brooklyn, NY and that's all I can ever catch them with is a soft plastic but I want to learn how to successfully  use other baits, and spinners are my favorite

Also when do you use a spinner? What time of day, conditions type of cover etc. thx

Give it a couple of more weeks. The temps right now in NY are in the high 70's to low 80's(very unusual for August) The waters will be cooling off and the bass will be moving in to feed and will be more aggressive. Then, the spinnerbait will be killer. In stained water, I would use a 1/2 oz tandem willow or willow and colorodo blades in gold and silver or both gold. White/chartruese skirt or all chartruese. Fish it at a moderate to fast pace and throw around visible cover(rocks, branches,tree stumps,docks,etc..)

seems like I have went away from using spinner baits, one of my biggest fish came from a spinner.  The past few months I have been on a frog and top water binge even if its working or not I still throw em.  When the weather cools down a bit here in FL I will throw my spinner, I love spinner baits in and around the spawn.

you're gonna have to accept the fact that you fish one of the most heavily fished ponds in the country. it's shallow with little cover. don't watch youtube videos of Glenn or KVD crushing bass on spinnerbaits and think you're going to do the same. they are on COMPLETELY different fisheries. that is def more of a soft plastic fishery. and you should be proud you are catching them on artificial lures  .  that is an accomplishment in itself b/c many guys there use live bait and take the fish home for dinner.

 

many baits just aren't going to be right for there (an Alabama rig, 8" Huddleston, 3/4oz jig are more like motor boats to those fish than food).  over 50% of fish caught end up as dinner so the remaining fish are very cautious.  a spinnerbait might work but the window of opportunity is going to be VERY small.  try dusk or dawn and try a very small Beetle spin or 1/4oz booyah pond magic.  spring/fall is ur next best time. 

 

if you want to become an expert in other lures and a better angler you should find new/unpressured water outside city limits.  north jersey has amazing reservoirs that are used as drinking water for nyc. or take the train down to south jersey and i'll take you out of some water that you can cast any lure you want.  there are pickerel down here that will literally bite ur spinnerbait right off ur line.

 

if you want to say close to home you have access to great tidal water. maybe forget about strictly bass and try a different species. there are monster catfish in the hudson. grab some heavier gear and hotdogs and have a blast

You have to remember, this really isnt the best time of the year for a spinnerbait. I would ONLY throw one if I knew the fish were actively feeding. Otherwise I would be fishing a slow t-rig or a senko or something like that. 

 

This time next month? Spinnerbait will be the game plan going into each day!

the fish in this lake aren't very big there pretty small the avg size is about a lb, is the half oz too big of a bait?

x2. I have a spinnerbait like this and have caught more fish on it (in many different bodies of water) than any other lure I own.

Too big for a bass? Never. You can go down to 3/8oz if you like
