Kayak Fishing

Anyone else enjoy this sport of kayak fishing?  I want to do it a lot in different lakes here in NC and rivers too.  I also want to try the Disney World charter they have.  We go to DW for a week each year.  Any info on the kayak fishing or the DW bass fishing stuff?

I haven't fished there, but there are plenty of fish in the two to three pound range.  I believe you can fish some of  the canals from shore, but you can only fish the "lakes" with a Disney guide.  According to the first article, you can rent a canoe and fish from it, but my guess is that you will be restricted to certain areas.

 

It's not cheap, but what is at Disneyworld?

As for the kayak fishing, I saw a magazine at Barnes and Noble called Kayak Angler.  Had some good stuff in it.

I've noticed that. Matter of fact, I saw Eric Young on Off the Hook in an episode where he was bass fishing on the devils river in Texas. He was bass fishing. I also looked on you tube and found some helpful info too.

Kayak bass fishing is a lot of fun. Be prepared to be very frustrated at first. It takes some practice maneuvering a yak and fishing at the same time. All worth it when the big fish starts pulling the yak around. Its and adrenalin rush.

Kayak fishing is my stress release from the toils and troubles that ail me. Catching is just a bonus. It is addictive though. You have been warned .

Do you guys anchor your kayaks or free float?

 

I ask because I've recently been fishing my pond out of a 12' aluminum canoe and the wind blows me all over the d**n place.

The answer is yes and no. I carry both an anchor chain (or dumbbell), and an anchor stick depending on conditions.

 

Free floating in the wind can be an exercise in frustration and controlling your tongue, LOL. I've been experimenting letting my anchor chain out a short ways in the water and it slows me (sometimes) enough to continue fishing and just drift, but slower than if I was free floating.

 

Others use a drift anchor, or chute to slow down in the current.

 

From experience, kayaks are not the sails that canoes are. My aluminum grumman was much worse to control in the wind, but kayaks being lower to the water don't *as much* *per se*... I'm hedging my words because it is all condition-dependent.

Kayak fishing is addictive. Be careful.

 

Same goes with me for the anchor. Most of the time I will drift but if I am fishing mangroves or a nice honey hole and I do not want to get pulled in by a nice fish then I will use my parking pole or an anchor if is too deep for the pole.

I use an anchor when it is too windy and I drift.  :-)

I started kayak fishing this summer, and it has become an obsession. i normally spend up to 12 hours on the water on Saturdays. I recommend bringing an 8 pack of Gatorade. Drink a full bottle and use the empty for your "exiting fluid".

I also bring a mini-cooler with a bunch of sandwiches.

I use a 1.5 pound anchor on a retractable dog leash.

An anchor trolley, stake out pole and some sort of standard anchor (i use a 5lb dumbell on a dog leash) are staples in my fishing.  In the rivers i do switch over to a drag chain if conditions warrant but usually i just use the stake out pole to stop the boat and i get out and fish an area.

 

I will also agree that an aluminum canoe is probably the worst thing for the wind out there with my Coosa being a close second
