Jig Trailers

I use allota pecca craws and chunks. They're cheap and got some action! Pork is my go to in the colder months as well!

Craws or swim jig trailers?

For Craws I use Rage Craws from Strike King and Pure Craws from Bass Assassin. Xcite Baits have some Craws too.

For swim jigs I use The Strike King Shellcracker, Menace and the Berkley Havoc Pit Boss. .

Most of the time Im using the Rage Tail craws. I love the "bama craw" color. In fact I havent tried that many other trailers because I love the Tage craws so much.

Rage craw, paca chunks, RI beavers are what I use almost all the time for brush/football jigs. Swim jigs I use rage craws, 5" grubs and havok subwoofers.

There was a good article about this subject in the August-September 2013 issue of FLW magazine. It should still be available at Wal-Mart. My personal favorites include the Berkley Chigger Chunk, Rage Chunk, and Zoom Super Chunk.

I like to play around with my trailers a lot.  Most people don't understand how crucial your trailer is for your jig to have a good appearance underwater.  I break my jig trailers down to 3 or 4 different things I'm looking for out of my jig....

 

Minimal action, slower fall: Uncle Josh Pork #11 or Zoom Super Salty Chunk

MInimal action, fast fall:  Zoon Tiny Chunk or Bass Pro Shops IncrediCraw (caught my pb on this)

 

Moderate vibration: Berkley Chigger Craw, Paca Chunk, Zoom Ultravibe Chunk

 

Maximum vibration: Strike King Rage Craw or Lobster, Culprit Tailgate Special (sleeper trailer), and Berkley Crazy Legs Chigger Craw

 

Another AWESOME trailer that no one uses anymore for when you want a streamlined lure package, ultra realism in clear water, or lethargic fish that have seen jig after jig hit them in the head, is the Luck E Strike Guido's Bug.  That thing freaking destroys fish for me.  I like to fish it texas rigged as well and pitch it around cover or drag it on a heavier rig on offshore structure.

I only fish three different trailers for my jig fishing they are grubs, craws, and swimbaits. For the grubs I only fish the zoom fat alberts or the kalins salty lunker grub. For the craws I only use the netbait paca craw and the rage chunk. As for swimbaits I only use the Havoc grass pig.

 

Use can use any type of trailer on any jig depending on the situation. When I am fishing swim jigs I will use a swimbait as a trailer 50% of the time, I only fish a grub on a swim jig when I am imitating smaller baitfish or if they want a different action. I fish craw when I want to imitate a craw.

 

Remember match you trailer color with the jig color.

This site has Strike King Rage Tail for a sponsor, you will get a lot of suggestions mostly due to sponsor loyalty and it's a good product.

Yamamoto single and double tail grubs in 41/2" or 5" with a wide color choice and work good. I am not a fan of oversize claw trailers, they catch more anglers than bass.

If you pitch into heavy cover the more streamline trailers tend to slide through weeds better; single tails, beavers, pit boss types. Casting and retrieving the double tails swim better.

Sometimes a contrasting trailer color works better than matching, experiment.

I gotta call B/S to your statement Tom. While SK/RT may be a sponsor, their baits are very innovative produce great results.

I would also venture to say that the people talking about RT are doing so because they have tried them, because they like them not just because they are from a product sponsor. Most everyone I know that fishes RT baits has not only increased the amount of fish caught using them but, many have increased the quality of their catches too. Not to mention many landing their new personal bests using RT Baits.

 

Frankly, it seems every time you get the chance to jab at RT, you do with some wise remark. I know you say they are good, it's just how you say it with such an underlying arrogance. Did you ever hear the term, read over a topic if you don't have something good to say. You are not setting a good example with these types of comments and one day your actions might well trigger someone else to decide to bash another sponsor. I'm surprised the staff hasn't noticed and addressed it either.

 There are many ideas within the Rage Tail line like the Baby Craw, Craw, Lobster, Twin Tail Menace, Shell Cracker, the Eeliminator, Space Monkey and the Grub. Each will provide different actions for different situations and presentations. Good Luck with your search.

I can honestly say that have I have fished darn near every trailer on the market for a jig whether it be a craw or swim style trailer. Having said that Rage can cover most of what you need amomg their product offerings. I am not one to give props to the sponsors here just to do so, but they have done a great job catering a product line to jig fisherman. The space monkey, smok'n rooster and especially the eeliminator are very under rated for bigger profile trailers.

Keitech's fat swing impact, Strike Kings Rodent, RI dipper, Zoom speed craw, Netbait Paca chunks, Megabass's bat and fly, and Big Hammers are all trailers that see alot of use on my jigs.

Coming from a guy with (10) 3700 series boxes full of jigs, I would start with some of the rage products in colors and styles that fit your water conditions and what you are trying to achieve with the jig.

There really isn't a right/wrong answer. Just experiment with some at different times of year to get the right profile and color they are keying in on.

Besides most of the trailers mentioned above I will use anything for a jig trailer that I can t-rig.

I've been using a shakey worm on the bitsy bug jigs for river smallies and it's really produced well.  It also comes through cover very easily.

I use Rage Craws, Zoom swim craws, Strike King KVD rodents and some other not well known brands that resemble those type of baits.

I generally use two trailers most of the time.  If I want something with a larger profile I'll use a Hula Grub or twin tailed grub.  If the bite is super tough I'll throw on a skinny bear signature pro series jig with a power team lures craw douvre.  Sometimes that smaller less active presentation is just the ticket!

 

Green pumpkin and black blue seem to work everywhere!

No disrespect, WRB, but I gotta go with Matty on this one.  There are TONS of sponsors on this site and none of them get pushed like Strike King's Rage lineup.  I think it has to do with 2 things.  1.  Steve Parks (creator of all the Rage designs) gets on here and will answer every question and comment, whether positive or negative, with a professional attitude and great, in depth write ups on how to get the best out of each bait.  Anglers apply that out on the water and end up catching more fish, thus, a ton of Rage Tail fans.  Roadwarrior pimps Yamamoto like his life depends on it and is a massive presence here on this board, yet, when a senko thread comes up, you don't see the response in loyalty to GYCB's Senko.

 

The Rage Tail line up is one set of products that straight kicks a$$, and I HATE most of Strike King's products they offer.

When regular board members speak of their success and liking of a board product it seems like an easier to accept notion than having mods or the sponsors "go out of their way" to do so.

I have fished products from 4 or 5 sponsors on here. Some I truly feel are towards the top among their competing market share and others I will likely never use again due to product failure and some of the worst customer service I have experienced.

With Steve and the folks at Rage behind the scenes you have the best of both worlds. A great product and the customer service to back it. I have been fishing the Rage line long before joining BR and will continue to use his products in various rigging styles but especially jig trailers.

Glad to see people are using the RT menace grub as a trailer, I just ordered some to try on swim jigs.
