Casting Light Lures Far!!!

Hi guys,

 

I am looking for a setup that will cast light lures FAR!!

 

I am fishing from shore most of the time and it's hard to get that lure "out there"! I fish mostly worms with a hook (no weight), small spinners, small plastics, basically lures with minimal to no weight....  

 

I was thinking about getting this setup what do you guys think? Will this please me? What do you guys have for setups?

To me casting light lures a good distance is never totally easy btu the set up you have listed will do so nicely.  Personally i would probably drop down a little on teh shimano reel and get maybe a sahara or symetre and put the extra money into a ST.Croix Avid rod instead.

I have a very similar setup and I would recommend using Berkley Nanofill with a leader as this line casts like a rocket.  I also have the SaHara and love the reel along with my Stradics, if you go with a SaHara and upgrade the rod I know I would be happier, however I do like my mojo and stradic..

Try using Power Pro Slick braid In around 4-6 pound. It wount hold any memory and might give you and increase in distance.

Also drop your bait 20" below the rod tip. It will help it load more, thus giving your increased distance.

What model Avid rod would be best? There are so many choices! LOL!

It seems like a good setup, but do what flyfisher said.  I would also recommend getting braid it has a very thin diameter which increases casting distance plus it is very sensitive so you can feel those really subtle bite.

 

I'm just curious how far do you need to cast.

I have a 6'8" MF avid with a saros on it, it can toss worms pretty far. I can also say that my avid is much more sensitive than my premier and my veritas.

What model Avid rod would be best? There are so many choices! LOL!

 

Tossing lightweight presentation far to me a longer more moderate rod is the ticket. One of my fav things to throw is what you mention and thats crawlers on a #4 hook. I dont have the particular mojo spinning model but I have the LTB 69MLXF rod in casting dont think I would like it in spinning for distance nor would it be as good as what I do like/prefer. What I have is an Avid 8' ML Mod spinning rod and it works great for just crawlers, small cranks like Bitsy Minnows mini fat raps in like 1/8oz size, small spinnerbaits like SK Rocket Shad, and it is my rod of choice for wacky senko. Weighs only 3.6ozs

 

On the reel I feel a 2500 size will give you better distance than 1000 size. I have a 1000 stradic and a couple other brands 20 & 30 size the larger spool reels just throw better. Im in agreement about going better on the rod and less on the reel in this area having $60-$170 reels just not much of a difference between them to me.

 

Line yes nanofil will be the best for distance you will need to experiment with knots find/use a good knot and the line holds past its rated strength its not a superline so its closer to its rating. Braid would be my defacto line for distance,line management ease,strength.

 

Now you didnt say conditions surroundings you fish so the 8' may be too long, if not its very much worth considering.

You would benefit more with a 7'+ Fast or Moderate action, medium light rod. 4-10lb rating instead of 6-10lb rating medium light power, More bend will get you out there farther

 

The Stradic CI4 1000FML isn't worth jack over the standard CI4F, all you are doing with the FML is losing more line spool, if you decide to go with a heavier line you won't have more to put on. .1oz is nothing.

 

Depending on plastics and hooks I would consider 6lb to drive the hook better.

For distance on a spinning reel I have to agree Nanofil is the way to go!

7'11" Medium action rod with the lightest test you feel comfortable with. Drop the bait down maybe 25-30i nches before casting it to help load it up.

There's something everyone here hasn't mention on a spinning reel.  Check how much line are you filling up on your spool.  You should be filling it up close to full.  You should be only 1mm shy from being full.   This will release line better and give you some extra yards.

i use a 7'6 light action/extra fast tip to cast the 1/4oz and lower baits for flats fishing and it casts them pretty far

With 4# line you are in the realm of ultra lite bass fishing. My question is why?

Fishing from shore with ultra lite limits what types of lures you can present effectively and if you are successful, the size of bass you land.

A long 9' medium action rod will cast further than a 7' medium action rod, the problem is finding enough clear space to use a longer rod when casting from shore. Compromise is what you must do. Add weight to your lures.

Trout anglers know how to cast a long distance with tiny lures by adding a clear water filled casting bubble, that is 1 method that works. When you are talking about rod sensitivity it gets lost on 2 power long rods with 4# line, I wouldn't waste money on high end rods using ultra lite 7'+ rods casting from shore.

I always have to watch out for the wind when I use light lures.  Something like an inline spinner I usually don't have a problem with, but a weightless finess worm will get blown up into a tree if I don't allow for the wind.
