Mxtaylor Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 So I think I got a steal today, but would like some opinions.. Found a 7'-0" Abu Veritas heavy for $40 and a Abu Orra SX baitcaster for $40 also on clearance. Currently I only have a 6'6 Abu Vendetta and Orra SX spinning setup. I fish a lot of solid frogs and Texas rig worms, craws, and creatures. Been using more jigs in spring, but not as much in the summer. Don't really fish a lot of crankbaits. Was the new setup worthwhile? I think it'll be good to transition some of my frog fishing to the heavy baitcaster. Any thoughts? Quote
Super User tomustang Posted August 6, 2013 Super User Posted August 6, 2013 Based off retail price you got a good deal, far as use only you can decide how well they work in your hands. Quote

I don't know about the reel but I have a 7' mh Veritas rod and its been very solid so far. Extremely sensitive and lightweight with Plenty of backbone. Quote
martintheduck Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 I know nothing about the reel. As for the rod - yes, good deal. Will be a solid rod to use for frogging or jigging. Rig up a reel with 30lb braid test and you're good to go Quote

Super User Bankbeater Posted August 6, 2013 Super User Posted August 6, 2013 Sounds like the store you were at was getting rid of its summer inventory. Quote
BigMoneyGrip Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 I have that same rod and like it. It doesn't seem all that sensitive, but I've hauled in plenty of fish with it. I use it for spinner baits and big swim baits. You can also hook it over a door and use it for chin ups! Quote
Mxtaylor Posted August 6, 2013 Author Posted August 6, 2013 Dick's Sporting Goods. It was just the 7' heavy rods. Sounds like I need to get out on the water and try it! Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted August 6, 2013 Super User Posted August 6, 2013 Sounds like a good deal to me. Personally I wouldn't use less than 40# braid. Not because you need the extra strength, but because the smaller diameter line might dig in when you pull a nice fish out of cover with 5 lbs. of weeds attached. The next cast could cost you your frog. I've easily snapped a 1/2 oz. jig off on my jig and worm spinning rod with 30# braid when the line wrapped around the end of the rod without my noticing. This same line will straighten out a jig hook with a steady pull. Quote
Grantman83 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 I also got the same rod...was able to also use my 600 extra points so I ended up with it for like 20 bucks...only problem is the rod is crazy tip heavy. My zillion didnt even balance it out lol... Also, it is more like a mag heavy. That tip is harder to bend than my 736c champion...seriously, it's a broomstick so I assume it would be great for big swimbait and a rigs Quote
huck007 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Nice, I have had an orra sx baitcaster for a year + and its still catching fish. I thought I would never use it again when i first bought my first revo sx, and then again when a bought my winch, and again when I bought my revo stx.... but the d**n thing just wont get off the front deck of my boat!! Its a little heavier than a revo s, but has the same braking system. A word of advice: after every trip run the faucet over the reel to get rid of the lake funk then oil as it states in your manual Quote
