I use a Dobyns Champion 702c. If you're willing to go up in price get the Champion Extreme.

You would have to find one "gently used", but the G.Loomis BCR893 would be my recommendation.

I think I paid $225 for mine from a member on our Flea Market.

Just putting this out there - if your budget is MINIMUM $200 then you can buy the best rod available. Customizing a rod would be a solid idea since you can find pretty much any blank and customize it with the best guides -plus- you can make it look good.

If you don't want to customize one then buy the most expensive m/h g.loomis. Or just spend $250 on a m/h cumara. Use a cumara exclusively for shaky heads because I can feel EVERYTHING. Favorite rod I've ever used.

Minimum or maximum?  Regardless, $250 is getting into the area where a custom built rod makes sense if you know what you want.  If you only have a general idea, then talking with a rod builder can narrow it down.  Mike is a good guy to work with.  He built a short Senko rod for my daughter at a very reasonable price.  Pink, of course!  :teeth:

I bought...off the classifieds...2 custom built rods over the winter.  Both are extremely nice.  I have no idea why you would be skeptic unless it is because you are new to Online fishing forums.  I'd like to have a few more custom built rods.  I would go all custom if I could afford it.  :teeth3:

I use a cumara 7'2" mh(senko rod) for shaky head all the way down to 25'+. I can feel every little change with 10lb fluorocarbon

it really depends on the weight of the shakey head you are throwing. although it would work, i wouldn't throw a 1/8 oz shakey head on the same rod or line as a 3/8oz.

I've never even thrown a 1/8 shakey head! So tiny!

I use a 7'2 MH xfast taper cumara for all my shakey head applications. Has all success. Also makes a great soft plastic rod and a perfect jigging rod.

heavier shakey heads are becoming more popular but traditionally they are usually 1/8 or 3/16.

I like my Dobyns DX742, works well with a core and 3/16oz heads.

Dobyns DX702 finesse is another rod lots of guys like for shakey heads as well (which by the way I have one I could part with)

Is this a good one or should I go for an MH instead? Cumara 7'2" Medium X-Fast Jig Casting Rod CUCX72MA

Negative. MediumHEAVY x-fast is the way to go IMO.   CUCX72MHA

And I say that after just purchasing a 7'11" Medium Cumara this week for deep cranking. The Medium just does NOT have backbone enough for legit ripping hooksets.

If you go with the MH, you'll have an awesome shaky rod as well as a great t-rig rod.

how small? unless you are almost always fishing a 3/8oz or 1/4oz /w a heavier gauge hook, I wouldn't get a MH. When talking about your standard jig/trailer, 1/4 is considered small. when talking shakey heads, small is 1/16 where the standard is 1/8 and 3/16. If you have a particular brand shakey head that you fish, that would help narrow down the rod as well. for example, using a MH rod for most 3/16 and 1/4 oz shakey heads wouldn't be ideal because of the lighter wire hooks they use. there are some heavier gauge hooks out there though. if the shakey head has a lighter wire hook, get a M rod. generally shakey head fishing is done with light 6,7,8# line so your line is also something you need to consider. "cross the eyes" hook set aren't necessary for fishing most shakey heads so unless you are using some think gauge wire hook, a M action rod will more than drive a hook home.

i almost always fish 1/8 oz and 3/16 /w 7# fluoro on a MLXF and MXF. occasionally 1/4oz if it's too windy and 25ft down.

Well funny your taking about that cuz I just went looking for the mh rod stats and It doesn't seem to be made for 3/16 to 3/8 jigs... I bought a ***** load of them on another site lol so base to square one.... What rod should I get... A Cumara a glx/nrx?  It needs to be able to handle 3/16 jig and be a casting rod

cumara-no experience with these but a MXF would be ideal

nrx/glx-852c for 3/16-3/8 shakey heads depending on the the trailer. if you are putting say a beaver bait on a 3/8 oz head, i'd opt for the 853 at least. as long as the plastic you are putting on the shakey head isn't something along the lines of a pit poss, RI beaver or anything that is pretty thick /w a lot of weight, the 852 would be perfect. your standard 7in trick worm, robo worm, etc on 8-10# fluoro will be great.

if you are looking for a rod to throw most trigs, medium shakey heads, small jigs the 853 would be your dream come true.
