I am looking for a finese reel and have to decide between the scorpion and the chronarch. Which do you guys recomend?

You should possibly add the Curado 50E and Chronarch 50mg to your list. If price is not a problem, the Core 50mg7 is a pretty popular reel.

the problem is they don't make two of those reels anymore. If price isn't a problem I reccommend the shimano core 50mg7 or aldebaran bfs. But if I had to pick between the two reels you listed then go with the scorpion.

There is a certain internet auction site where used reels are sometimes bought and sold. Plus there's always the Flea Market.

Between those two you may want to think big picture. Essentially further upgrades to help the reel achieve a true finesse state. Both reels have a special finesse spool upgrades that can be purchased. Also upgraded bearings and supertuning will help as well. A scorpion for the most part, if purchased new will run you around $220+. This is what I have seen them go for on auction sites and what can be had on japantackle. However the chronarch can be bought for around $160 or so when retailers have their sales.

In terms of performance the scorpion is slightly better out of the box among users of both reels. The scorpion is obviously a much more rare reel and may hold its value better if either matter.

If I was fishing one out of the box I would probably opt for the scorpion. However if I planned on doing upgraded bearings, a finesse spool, and a supertune it would be much more cost efficient to start with chronarch at say $160 and build from there.

I have a scorpion 1000xt on the way. This will be added to other 50 size shimano reels I have so I can better break down the differences in a week or two. I did not purchase the reel for finesse fishing (as I have other casting reels for that) but I could throw some light stuff with the chronarch 50e and scorpion 1000xt if you wanted to know the lower limits of baits on those reels.

How light of baits were you planning on using when you say "finesse"?

Core 50mg7 would be my recommendation.  Or get a chronarch 50e/curado 50e and get them supertuned/bearings and drags!

There is a great core 50mg7 in the flea market I held yesterday!  Great reel!

i have the chronarch 50E and the scorpion 1001XT. i'm hard-pressed to notice much difference between them although the scorpion seems perhaps a tad smoother. the chronarch comes with the larger "power" septon knobs. here's a pic of mine side-by-side (i replaced the scorp's spool here with a yumeya shallow spool, which also fits the chrony):

Been wondering this myself.

Can get a new scorpion XT for the same price as a new chronarch.  Also I believe the scorpion is listed as slightly lighter than the 50 series chronarch.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

I found the cheapest chronarch 50e at $180 and the cheapest scorpion 1000 xt at $225. The scorpion is at 6.7 ozs and the chronarch at 7.1. Those are new prices.

Your definition of finesse could vary, there's 1/2oz finessing..

Either reel or even the curado 50 will do fine out the box regardless. The color is up to you.

Thanks. I too have seen the scorpion for $199 so that is what promted this question. I am going to be using this reel to throw smaller jigs and t-rigs. probably around 3/16oz.

The Scorpion is lighter as it has brass gears that IMO make it feel a slight touch smoother.

The Scorpion MG is the better reel IMO. I have used the 1000XT and the MG is superior. Check eBay out there are good deals on the Scorpion MG. One can be had for around 150

The Core 50 is the bomb. MGX also. Both top class finesse reels.

Where was the scorpion $199? Everywhere I looked it was $199+$25 shipping. I personally found a couple of the xts used and they are awesome at a fraction of the price. I also have 2 mg's but still prefer the xt's. I also like the 1500 & 1501s, but since I bought my Antares they dont get used.

i ordered my scorpion from japantackle for $199 + $20 EMS shipping...got it in 5 days. the scorp and 50E both have brass gears with each main gear weighing an identical 12 grams, i believe the 0.4 ounce difference is due to the scorp not having an anti-reverse pawl and substantially bigger knobs on the 50E. the only other differences are the scorp has 5 more AR bearings in place of the SS bearings in the 50E and the knobs on the scorp are ugradeable from 2 bearings to 4 whereas you're stuck with 2 on the 50E.
