XxXbugslingerXxX Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 Hello Everyone, I was wondering if anyone has any tips they are willing to share for Bass fishing on Hefner, Largemouth or Smallmouth. I recently moved back to Oklahoma from Utah. Grew up in Waurika, OK and live about 10 min from Hefner so its easy access for fishing in the afternoons. It looks promising and i have caught a few here and there lately but it's slow going. Any info is greatly appriciated. Thank You Quote
Bladesmith, Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 It has been years since I fished Hefner. That being said, I could usually drag up a few bass on white Colorado single bladed spinner baits on the east end. Used 1/8 oz. marabou jigs (no trailer) and caught a few small walleyes (1/2 lb. or so) on the dam end. With the droughts of the last couple years I don't know what kind of condition the lake is in. There are several guys from that area on BR that can probably give you more detailed and up to date info. Quote
JCOX2011 Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 I was just out there this past weekend. We got a couple over at what used to be the police dock in that cove just south of all the restaurants. I was fishing a 5" Senko in Watermelon color. Then a couple on 3 bladed Boo Yeah spinner baits on the other side of the lake near the spillway. The water is up so if you have a flat bottom boat I bet you could float the shallows and get access to that small lake area in that area as well. Quote
Fishman35 Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 I have no advice on fishing Hefner, but was raised in Waurika, OK. When were you there? Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted August 17, 2013 Super User Posted August 17, 2013 Hefner is a hard lake to fish. My best luck has come on the last fishing pier on the NW side of the lake. Follow the shore around to the north and hit that point. The top water was best there for me last year. Now this year it's been bust. We had so much d**n wind this year that fishing anywhere here kinda sucked. I've had some decent luck off the dam, but you have to do some walking and driving. Anywhere else there has been a bust for the last couple of years. That place gets so much pressure from the locals that anything worth a size is gone or out deep. Everytime I go out, I have 10-12 people with a 5 gallon bucket keeping everything they catch. The OKC PD Lake Patrol is too busy with prostitutation and muggings to worry about people catching fish illegally lol Quote
XxXbugslingerXxX Posted August 24, 2013 Author Posted August 24, 2013 Thanks for the tips so far guys. Fishman35... I was in Waurika from the time i was born, i graduated from high school there in 99-2000, the majority of all my family still lives there. Quote
XxXbugslingerXxX Posted September 17, 2013 Author Posted September 17, 2013 Just an update for anyone viewing this post, i have been having pretty good luck on Hefner the last few times that i have gone out. Mostly fishing different points around the lake with a chartreuse/white spinnerbait with colorado and willow leaf blade, once i catch a couple on that i start throwing a 6' Diving Crankbait and it produces a few more from the same area. The best so far was right around 5lbs. Also found out that the catfish out there love the crankbait as well off the rocks by the restraunts i have managed to catch 3 all 10lbs or more bouncing it off the bottom along the rocks. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted September 17, 2013 Super User Posted September 17, 2013 Good report! I'm headed to Hefner tomorrow am. I plan on hitting the d**n first then when the wind picks up, I am going to move inward. My boat is too small for Hefner so I'm going shore bound Quote
efoss348 Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 I'm also from Waurika. I live up here in the metro area and try to fish every chance I get. I've been wanting to try out Hefner. Have you been out since the cold hit? Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted December 8, 2013 Super User Posted December 8, 2013 I'm also from Waurika. I live up here in the metro area and try to fish every chance I get. I've been wanting to try out Hefner. Have you been out since the cold hit? I've been out there every day for the last week. I haven't had a bite one yet. The last doubt we had really killed the lake. All I've seen caught and caught myself have been year old fish that they restocked this year. Provided we have a few good years of rain like this year, it may turn out to be a pretty good place. efoss348 Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 I have been out several times since this post. Right before the cold got here, I have been slaying sandbass and crappie. Haven't quite figured out how to catch the Hybrids yet, but I want to! So far I have caught sandbass, some of the biggest I have ever seen, crappie, decent sized though most are small, a few small mouth mouth bass and a big ass shad!! I am debating on trying to fish this winter weather. I might go out if it is EXTREMELY CALM but I bought froze myself to death on the boat the other day, and it was in the 40's! So far, my experience has been great with lake Hefner. I can't wait to figure out how to catch those hybrids! Quote
