kyron4 Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 Hello, anyone have much luck catching bass on Blakemore Road Runner jigs ? I used a 1/8 oz. chart. jig with 3" chart. twister tail for white bass last year and did well. Do they work for 10"-12" large and smallmouth bass as well ? Should I drop down to a 2" tail ? -Thanks Quote
Rob G. Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 I can with all honesty say they are a great small mouth bait. I am sure you can catch large mouth on them also. Quote
Super User T-rig Posted March 20, 2007 Super User Posted March 20, 2007 I asume that you want to catch 10-12" bass for a pond/fishtank? Quote
Bionicman Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 I asume that you want to catch 10-12" bass for a pond/fishtank? Actually I have caught some very good fish on the road runner. I use BPS version Stump Jumper and I have caught 22" and 23" on it. Work very well and it is actually one of my go to baits. Quote
KenDammit28 Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 I know many "hardcore" fishermen that look right over the roadrunner and just dismiss at a bluegill or crappie bait...its not. I use it quite often when times are tough in the summer and catch many nice bass on them. I use 1/8 and 1/4 oz heads with 3 inch grubs and can catch bass when nothing else worked in the same spots. Use em, they WILL catch you bass. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted March 20, 2007 Super User Posted March 20, 2007 Another vote for the Roadrunner for bass. I always have a 1/4oz with a 3" grub for a trailer tied on in the early part of the year. I rarely use one in warm water. It tends to be a dink magnet in warm water, but in the early spring, or late fall, they are killers. I favor the larger sizes with the willow leaf blades. Cheers, GK 1 Quote
Super User Raul Posted March 20, 2007 Super User Posted March 20, 2007 I know many "hardcore" fishermen that look right over the roadrunner and just dismiss at a bluegill or crappie bait...its not. Hail Ken ! Hail Ken !, the man is wise. Quote
Fish Man Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 yes i use the maribou yellow not alot but when i do it will catch good to decent sized bass Quote
georgiabassfisherman Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 well i will say this just because it is a little bait doesnt mean its just for little fish one day fishing with little tiny beetlespins for redbreast sunfish with one of those little green firetiger reels u get from walmart i caught a 3pound bass and a 3pound chain pike aka a jack fish both put up great fights and both were released after a photo so bait size doesnt matter every time. Fish Man Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 i agree with gergiabassfisherman......ive caught bass in the 3 pound range on a 1/16 roostertail....i think sometimes little baits may work better than larger depending on what their feeding on Quote
ga_hawghauler Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 i recently came in 3rd place in a tourney and both of these guys that fininshed ahead of me was fishing roadrunners. also i was talking to a friend of mine who is a local dnr ranger and he was telling me about some a couple of guys who was fishing on up the lake who was throwing them and having good luck. I havent tried them but i see me giving them a try in the very near future Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted March 21, 2007 Super User Posted March 21, 2007 You know the ole saying that "big lures catch big fish". Well little lures catch all size fish. I use the 1/16 oz. Roadrunner a lot with a 2" white curlytail grub and have caught bass up to 7# with it. It's a great post cold front lure. The best ones to handle bigger fish are the ones with the Gammy hooks. I use 20# Whiplash and a buddy of mine uses the Spiderwire Fusion in 10#, both lines are no longer available. Quote
cjensen Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 Roadrunners are what my dad and grandpa taught me to fish with. It is hands down my number one confidence lure/bait. When fishing is slow and nothing seems to work I will always tie a roadrunner and a single tail grub (nothing fancy, a 4" grub in either white or black). Most times I can salvage a slow day with this setup. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted March 21, 2007 Super User Posted March 21, 2007 I agree with the others that a roadrunner (1/8 or 1/4oz are my favorites-on 6 or 8# line) is a very good bass bait. In very clear water, esp. when the bite is slow, they will often save the day. You may pick up a few BIG crappie as a bonus. A 3" grub is my favorite trailer, but I have caught many on marabou without any other trailer. Quote
fish-fighting-illini Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 I too use the Roadrunners and Stump jumpers a lot. I have caught many bass and crappie on them. The last one being a 4lb LMB. The nice thing is you can use them for Crappie and catch bass at the same time. I don't think I use anything higher than 1/8 or 3/16" and never use any kind of trailer. I always use the small colorado type blade. I generaly use with around 6-8lb mono. They seem to work very well for me when I downsize with hot temps. Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 Hey just last week at the Fork I believe it was TBendTex, was fishing crappie with a RoadRunnes and hooked a Bass! Quote
aggiebassin Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 we use road runners alot in ponds. and have caugth many bass over 2# and a few over 4#. i think they are a great lure for ponds and a good cold front lure in lakes Quote

I only use use a ultra lite rod and reel with 4lb test with 1.5 inch tube jigs and small lures. My son and I catch walleye, crappie, LM Bass and occasionally catfish. We religiously hook into fish more than 3 pounds. In my opinion using line heavier than what your fishing for takes the sport out of it. Anyone can use 8lb test to land a 5lb fish but its kind of comparable to a man driving off the ladies tee in golf. Quite often when were out catching fish on consistent basis will see other fisherman using gigantic lures and not even getting a single bite. Quote
ironbjorn Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 If a 2.5-3" Ned Rig will catch them, so will Road Runners. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted July 3, 2021 Super User Posted July 3, 2021 Jimmy Houston says if you want to catch them all, including bass, an 1/8 oz. RR is just the trick. My buddy's GF caught a 7 pounder on a 1/32 RR while they were trolling for crappie early this year. Quote
