Nice_Bass Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Dislocated my right shoulder last night and I am right handed. I can cast and do everything on my left so that should not be a problem, but I am thinking long hooksets could be an issue as I set overhead or up and to the right. Other than switching to a heavy action rod and braid, of which neither I want to do, any one been in this situation and find a good way to fish pretty much one handed. One issue I know I will have, I have been fishing mostly for stripers lately (big spoons, swimbaits, etc), and may have to back down to lmb until this feels a bit better. Stripers fight too hard, always requires two hands on the rod just to hold on! thanks, Mark Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted July 31, 2013 Super User Posted July 31, 2013 Dang that sucks. I guess you could try a fighting belt for the stripe. I don't know. Rehab it and give it a month. Just go easy on it for awhile. Do not over use the dang thing. It will come back and bite you. 1 Quote
Super User slonezp Posted July 31, 2013 Super User Posted July 31, 2013 Did you damage the labrum? As far as hooksets, If it hurts, don't do it. Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted July 31, 2013 Super User Posted July 31, 2013 I dislocated my left shoulder when I was 19. I never let it heal properly, and continued to play baseball, 2 weeks after the dislocation. I had no issues until I hit my late 30s, then I could start to feel why everyone says to let it heal. Super User BassinLou Posted July 31, 2013 Super User Posted July 31, 2013 Just rest it and take time off of it. Easier said than done when it comes to fishing, I know. I hope it was just minor dislocation. Depending on the severity someone just mentioned it, you didn't tear your labrum, which is common after shoulder dislocations. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted July 31, 2013 Super User Posted July 31, 2013 You need to heal. A little time away could turn into a very long time away if you make your injury worse. I had a friend who dislocated his shoulder and decided to "pop it back in" and ignore it. He reinjured it a week or so later and ended up having surgery to repair it. According to him it's never been the same again. Stripers will be there when you are healed. Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 1, 2013 Super User Posted August 1, 2013 As they say in dog obedience school, heal. Do what the guys say to do and postpone your fishing satisfaction until you are 100%. As you age these small injuries come back to haunt you. Quote
Nice_Bass Posted August 1, 2013 Author Posted August 1, 2013 Thanks all...still fishing today, but will be out a couple weeks everything else. Turning 30 this month- and I have screwed up my shoulder now three times in the past two years. It may be my time to officially retire from soccer. Smaller baits, lighter hooks, and easier hooksets with left arm and swinging all fish in with a heavier rod with really long butt. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted August 3, 2013 Super User Posted August 3, 2013 Nice_Bass, the warning signs are there. You just said it. 3 injuries in 2 years. I know its tough, but rest that shoulder. Do the proper rehab and take some time off. 1 Quote
