I went out tonight to a spot that has been producing a steady frog bite with some quality fish. Tonight did not disappoint. This was a highly UN-scientific comparison, but it was fun! :)

I fished for about 2 hours total, starting at ~7:30pm. First up was the KVD Sexy Frog in the Spring Frog color. I went 1 for 4 on this one bringing in a nice 2.5lb. large mouth. I noticed with this frog the ones I missed felt like short strikes. On the one I did catch he hit it well and was hooked right in the top of the mouth. With this frog I was using a 7' MH Lightning Rod Shock, Shimano Citica with 50lb. Power Pro braid.

Second was the Spro Bronze Eye Jr. in the Rainforest Black color. I went 2 for 3 on this frog, Bringing in 2 fish both in the 2lb. range.  The strikes on this frog were all aggressive. It seemed to hook the fish better than the KVD frog. With this frog I was using a 6'-6" M Lightning Rod (older model), Lew's Sped Spool with 14lb. Trilene XT green.

I suspect the better hook rate with the Spro frog was due to the softer action rod with the mono. I'm still trying to discipline myself to wait on the hook set, especially when using braided line. The one fish I did bring in on the KVD frog I purposely waited on the hook set. I'll be the first to admit in the difficulty in waiting after seeing the fish boil on the bait!

Both frogs had nice action and are very well built. Both have quality hooks in them and a drain hole for water. If the frog gets a little water logged just squeeze it, the water shoots out and you're good to go. I did trim the leg skirt material a 1/4" or so on the KVD frog as I felt it was a bit long.

Next test I'll switch frogs on each rod and will be adding the Booyah Pad Crasher in the Swamp Frog color.

Sorry, no pictures on this trip as I left it in the truck.....doh!

Good write up I have both frogs and stick with the spro, the KVD model is just a tad to big and I think that is why I miss fish on it, the spro frog is just right and I took Ish's recommendation of bending out the hooks slightly, I did this with one hook more so then the other and while I get weeds on it now I find most of my hookups are from that hook that I bent out more, also my hookups are more then 75% of the time.

I have been fishing hollow body frogs primarily this year and have found that hook ups are generally the same with the ones I use. The big difference is durability.

  1. Spro Bronze Eye - extremely high durability and very little wear considering I use these the most. Rarely if ever get hung up in lily pads. 80% hook up
  2. Live Target - Very soft and pliable, the hooks will "disengage" from the body which increases the hook up as well. Have found that the hook has pierced the body a few times. Also it seems that the paint? / pattern is wearing a bit after 6 or so outings. 75% hook up
  3. Matzuo Kroaker - A little less durable and tend to land upside down more often than the others. Have had to modify the body on both I have because it wasn't releasing enough air when squished. Hook ups have been approx 75%
  4. Forget the name of this one - Hook ups have been about 80% but as you can see the durability leaves a lot to be desired. This is only after 5 or so outings.http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/gallery/image/6778-unknown-frog-underside/   http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/gallery/image/6779-unknown-frog-side-view/

I use 2 set ups . a shimano citica coupled to an bps xtreme 7' medium heavy with 30lb braid and a Pflueger President with a bps xtreme medium heavy with 30lb braid.

I always have them tied directly with a palomar knot

I used to throw way more plastics about 90% of the time. I am now throwing hollow bodies 80% vs 20% plastics.

All in all I have had an absolute blast this far this year with hollow bodies as I was getting a bit bored of throwing plastics.

I love froggin too! I've used pretty much all kinds of frogs, even a little 99-cent version from someplace. I've had at least some amount of success with them all. Particularly I've been having luck with a little Matzuo frog. It's smaller than the Spro's and definitely smaller than the KVD's. I've had good hookups and they squeeze water out pretty well. I've never had to bend any hooks out or anything.

You may be quite happy with the Booyah frog. The paint, especially the details, rubs off very fast in my experience but they are super freakin' soft and pretty well priced.

That said, my personal favorite right now is the KVD in green pumpkin with the green/white legs and 3/4" trimmed off.

Went out tonight to continue my highly UN-scientific frog comparison. Tonight I threw the Booyah Pad Crasher in the Swamp Frog color and the Spro Bronze Eye Jr. in the Rainforest Black color.

I found the Booyah Pad Crasher very easy to fish. It has good action and is fairly easy to walk the dog with it. I went 4 for 4 with the largest coming in at about 3lbs. The frog seems to be softer than the Spro and KVD frogs and the hook up percentage was 100%! Very impressive.

On the Spro I went 0 for 1. The fish seem to just not be interested in this frog today.

Next time out I'm going to test the Booyah against the KVD frog.

I think he wanted it!

Food for thought ;)

Was the lure or the timing?

The bite could simply been better tonight!

FYI I perfer Academy's frog on a All Star Pro Series PR826C 6' 10" MH Xfast, Cardiff 100, 15# Big Game.

I have about 10 Spros and one of the old Tru Tungsten frogs. I love the Spro 65. Have not used the jrs nearly as much but maybe I will start using them more.  The Tru Tungsten frog is much stiffer and I do not really like it.  I am interested in trying the Booyah and KVD frogs, but I have been doing really well on the Spro 65 in red ear lately.

The slurp..set it. The tackle wait for it. I fish my frog ona 7'0 Fenwick HMX musky rod with 50 pound braid I can sling it a COUNTRY mile and It has the backbone to drag em out of there.

I am koppers fan, like I have mentioned before, however I was gifted a booyah frog not so long ago and I said what the heck. I have used it on my last two outings and I have found that it easier to walk than Koppers. I was 50/50 yesterday. Caught one lost one. I cannot say it was the frog, not enough fish attempts have been made yet. So far, for the price point not a bad frog. I will continue using it.

Love the Padcrasher, LOVE IT...  I have had horrible luck with Live Target frogs and mice, all 3 sunk right out of the package.  Padcrashers and Spro Popping Frogs are the way to go.

I have used spro for many years and with much success. This year I tried a padcrasher popper, mainly because of the much lower price. I still need more time, but i am very impressed with the pad crasher. They seem to be more durable and I have not suffered  anything on the hooksets. At present I've caught about 80 fish on my first pad crasher. many of them in the 2-3# range 5# being the largest. Spro might have lost a long time customer.

UPDATE just caught about 20 more on the Booyah Pad Crasher. That makes it close to 100 bass on one frog and it still looks great.

Out of curiousity, are you fishing the Pad Crasher in open water or in heavy concentrations of pads or...? I haven't tried the Pad Crasher yet as I catch nearly every fish that gets a Bronzeye Jr in its mouth but in a good day of frogging (20-30 bass), in extremely heavy pads, i can completely trash a Bronzeye Jr. Trashed to the point that the weight is ripped out and the frog is torn in multiple areas. As a matter of fact I have rendered two Bronzeye Jr's completely useless in one 8 hour tournament.

Thanks.

This year the the pads are thin to non- existent on top. I''ve been catching them in weeded areas, but for the most part, little to no matting on top. Earlier this year the spro frog seemed to tear up much quicker in similar conditions.
