Mccallister25 Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 As we know, whitetail is right around the corner. My buddy and myself were discussing the issue of using scentless products, which had me curious to ask which of you guys(or gals) swear by these products, and which of you dont think its a huge deal. I was taught that it matters to an extent. Early mornings, Ill take a scentless shower and have my gear washed in scent away, but for that afternoon Ill go out as is, with the exception of a few sprays of the bottled scent away. What do you guys think? Quote
MDBowHunter Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 If you was to pick a time not to shower I would make it the morning instead of the evening. I say this because if you go in in the morning the temps will rise as the sun does which will actually lift your scent. As where in the evening the sun is setting and the air is getting cooler and heavier, which in turn will push your scent to the ground. This is the same reason I try to never hunt in a bowl type of area or a bottom in the evening. Now as far as Scent lock and all that kinda stuff, I've purchased lots of but haven't in five or more years as I believe is pretty much a gimmick. Now I do wash all my camo and base layers in Dead Down Wind laundry detergent and hang outside days before I use it. All my hunting stuff is stored in scent free totes, and that includes anything that goes in the woods with me. I take a shower in the am and in the afternoon during early bow season, along with changing to and from my camo at my truck before I go in the woods. I also pretty much take a bath in Dead Down Wind spray before I leave the truck, along with soaking all of my gear. I'm also a firm believer in not using cover scents also, I feel that no scent is better then a strange scent (to the deer that is), except for around the rut when using doe in estrus urine... Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted July 31, 2013 Super User Posted July 31, 2013 X2 with the dead down wind products. I just wash all my clothes in the ddw then throw it in a garbage bag with grass clippings and leaves or pine needles from the woods I hunt. I've had deer in the middle of gun season walk in my foot prints and down wind from me within heck pocket knife range. My big half rack buck 2 years ago did this came from the down wind side standing in my tracks in the mud shot him at 16yds 2nd to last day of gun season. I think the whole scent lock stuff is a gimmick to an extent. You still need to treat it like you would any other clothing for hunting. Scent lock doesn't do you any good if you leave it on the counter in your house or wear it in your truck you smoke in I say this because my brother in law does these things and gets ticked his top dollar scent lock doesn't work. It's mainly to control your body odor which some scent a way or DDW soap and anti persprent will do the same thing. A quick spray down at the woods with some scent killer and your good to go. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted August 1, 2013 Super User Posted August 1, 2013 I use the natural earth scent on my boots a clothes. I do cut a notch in a pine tree branch so it bleeds a pine scent with the sap. On my land only of course. I've walked up on deer and had many does walk by me on the ground. While working out side I had a 12Ptr walk right near me as we cleaned up. Go figure but he had like 10 does with him. Quote
Mccallister25 Posted August 4, 2013 Author Posted August 4, 2013 Like I said, I usually just shower, and wash my clothes in scentless soap. I use the fresh Earth dryer sheets. Iv seen a bunch of commercials for DDW. Imma pick some up this year to try out. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted August 6, 2013 Super User Posted August 6, 2013 I do hang my clothes outside sometimes with cut apples in the pickets before there was scents. While at the camp it was GI bucket hand washes everyday. It was ok hand washing our bodies when we were camping/hunting but as I got older I can't do it now. I'll have running water soon. Quote
