The Young Gun Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Was fishing for musky last night, calm lake and the bucktail just wasn't producing. Found a big 7" walk the dog bait and threw it by the dock. Never used one before, I got the thing to walk back and forth then I saw a huge splash and reeled in like heck on my 8ft Heavy Fenwick ET rod this. I think I found my new bass presentation that I want to try. Quote
Super User AK-Jax86 Posted July 30, 2013 Super User Posted July 30, 2013 Nice fish! You need to post some pics of these musky you catch, I always wanted to fish for them I don't think we have them here in FL. When I was in NJ I would catch pickerel and pike nice big ones but never a musky. My buddy in NJ caught a few. Quote

I've seen the 50" fish, but never caught one... Quote
Kevin22 Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I love walking topwaters. My favorite lure to catch fish on. Unlike a traditional popper you can work them super fast to get a reaction strike or super slow to sort of finesse the bass into taking it. You can even fish them like a popper by popping your rod straight without giving slack to make it scoot forward and spit. Quote

5dollarsplash Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Thats a pretty musky. My homelake has a limit of 50" for musky now, in the fall you can get some big monsters on. Check DNR population records, Rice Lake WI has a number of large (35"+) fish compared to smaller sizes. If you can find similar lakes near you, it'll increase your chances of getting a wall hanger. I was trying the same presentation last night with a suick, I think I need to find a smaller one as it was getting attention but they seemed like aggression strikes not feeding bites. Quote
38 Super Fan Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Nice fish! Walking baits can be a fun addiction for sure, for about a month earlier this year that's all I was throwing. Quote

One day ill boat a 50".. I've been raising lots of fish on single #8 bucktails. Caught a small one on a soft tail glider a few days ago. My musky season hasn't been incredible but I love knowing any cast could be the wall hanger. Quote
Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted July 31, 2013 Super User Posted July 31, 2013 Nice fish! I love walk the dog type baits. Just got into them this season and they've really been producing for me. Quote
Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted July 31, 2013 Super User Posted July 31, 2013 Yeah walk dog baits have there time and place tonight was not.one of them!! Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 31, 2013 Global Moderator Posted July 31, 2013 Check out the Black Dog Lunker Punker. It's a big walking bait that will catch muskie and bass with surprising regularity! I don't get to muskie fish much because there aren't many around here but it seems every time I go I'll catch a couple bass on big baits fishing for them. Then I bass fish and catch muskies on spinnerbaits and squarebills. Quote

Super User bigbill Posted August 1, 2013 Super User Posted August 1, 2013 I have had awesome success with the walk your dog lures with bass and pickerel here. The three 30" pickerel I caught so far have been the best fighters. The top props and super top props by mister twister have been awesome lures too. The pickerel also like the mepps larger inline spinners too. I see the guys in boats on tv keep the lure in the water near the boat and using the rod do a figure "8" in the water. The pike come right up and hit it. When logging the forest one day near a big lake that has pike I was near a dog leg inlet watching two pike ambushing everything in there path. Just watching them feed was awesome. Quote
The Young Gun Posted August 1, 2013 Author Posted August 1, 2013 Just going through my walk the dog baits, love em !! I don't have any bass size walk the dog baits but seeing other people like them and have success I might have to buy a few! Quote
