jason41987 Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 as stated in previous posts.. im relatively new to lure fishing.. i used live baits almost exclusively before but ive been having such phenominal success and tons more fun with lures the last few weeks, and im really enjoying this more active, hands-on way of fishing.. so.. ive been trying different lures.. texas rigged worms, hollow body frogs, spoons (phenominal success catching pike with a five of diamonds spoon).. but the lure im REALLY beginning to love are jigs i just started using jigs, purchased some weedless jig heads, assortments of grubs and other soft bodies.. and i love it.. different color jig heads, skirts, i can add rattles, blades, different size, type, and color of grub.. i can catch just about any kind of fish with these depending on the configuration, and im simply beginning to love these... and im actually quite excited now because im the DIY type.. so im probably going to pick up a jig mould and start casting my own jig heads, painting them, and assembling jigs from scratch anyone else love the variety and versatility of jigs as much as im beginning to? Jigs 4 Pigs Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Yes, me too!! (love the variety & versatility) Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 30, 2013 Global Moderator Posted July 30, 2013 My favorite bait to fish. I enjoy topwater as much as the next guy, but I'll take the defined "thump!" of a big fish hitting a jig over a topwater explosion any day. 1 Quote

Agreed, top water gets me giddy like a school kid, but that thump on a jig is my legal crack! Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted July 30, 2013 Super User Posted July 30, 2013 Nothing like pitching a jig into the water and seeing that line start taking off. Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 30, 2013 Super User Posted July 30, 2013 The best part of jig fishing is setting the hook and seeing your rod bend in half and the reel screech to a halt. Then the fight and higher blood pressure wondering if she will get unhooked. Man, don't you guys just love setting a jig? It still gives me a rush and gets my blood pumping. 5 Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted July 30, 2013 Super User Posted July 30, 2013 The rush that comes over you after a stellar hookset with a jig is very rewarding. It's like I got you now! Quote
JayKumar Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Love jigs and worms for the same reason -- THUMP! Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted July 30, 2013 Super User Posted July 30, 2013 I have to do more jig fishing. I worked with it a little bit and the bites on them are definitely addicting. Quote
Super User AK-Jax86 Posted July 30, 2013 Super User Posted July 30, 2013 Jig fishing can be really addicting! I use to jig often but now I have been exclusively using frogs for the past 3 weeks This one pond at this golf course I fish is the perfect spot for froggin and jiggin! I haven't thrown a jig there just frogs over the slop but I am going to try punching jigs through the thick stuff and pull out a BIGGEN Quote
jason41987 Posted July 30, 2013 Author Posted July 30, 2013 you know what has me most excited about jigs?.. the prospect of DIY lure making... sure, i can make crankbaits like topwater minnows, diving minnows, things like the zara spook.. but the jigs has me excited towards casting my own jig heads.. painting them, adding skirts, feathering, the absolutely huge variety of soft baits like worms, grubs, lizards that i can add to it, spoons, rattles, props.. im excited to get the things i need to start making my own and who says it CANT be topwater?.. i could probably drill a hole through a piece of balsa dowel, then cut it in half and glue it back together with the hook inside it and make floating jig heads for some topwater action i almost got into fly fishing just so i could tie my own flies.. this is close enough if not better Quote

PABASS Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I didn't start using a jig until a few years ago, until watching you tube videos and specifically Gene's video I just had no idea how to catch them with one. I read a few articles on this site and even spoke with a nice man on the phone and he just recommended I take them to a small pond and I did and pun intended I am HOOKED. I nailed the fish that day, been to this pond many times and while I typically catch a few I had 7 in an hour or so. Jig landed (pun) one of my largest Bass this year. I have to say any lure that catches fish is fun to me, but jigs do rank high with fun factor.. Quote
bluezed Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I threw a jig for the first time last weekend. Swim jig, actually, and it got hit on the fall on my first cast out. Pretty cool, and definitely an area I want to venture deeper into. Quote
ToadTorcher Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Gaining confidence in a jig took a long while for me. Stuck with it and now it's one of my favorite lures to fish by far! Quote
BuffaloBass716 Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 This is my first year bass fishing and I think using jigs is what im missing. I need to try a few. Quote
jason41987 Posted July 30, 2013 Author Posted July 30, 2013 since i fish from shore.. i do not do vertical jigging.. ill either swim them through the water or drag them on the bottom and ive found a nice color combination that actually offers me a variety of fish biting them... last night i caught 5 fish in 30 minutes, even one on the cast immediately after landing another fish.. i got 3 bass, all about 15 inches long, one northern pike of decent size, and a bowfin Quote

jason41987 Posted July 31, 2013 Author Posted July 31, 2013 ive been using weedless swim jigs from shore,, like this one http://images.cabelas.com/is/image/cabelas/s7_121012_001_01?hei=220&wid=380 and i add a grub to that.. notice the thick bristles on the head that extend upwards in front of the point of the hook.. these push weeds aside so the hook wont spear them.. and ive seen people add inline spoons and rattles to these too... i caught a very large bowfin today.. fish was huge and put up a hell of a fight, actually tearing line off the spool with all 15lbs of drag on Quote
Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted July 31, 2013 Super User Posted July 31, 2013 Mmm jigs I just got my fix before I might need to go back out..I shouldnt of read this post! Quote
jason41987 Posted July 31, 2013 Author Posted July 31, 2013 im still pretty suprised that on this simple swim jig i got a fish so big it was pulling line out against all 15lbs of the drag on my ambassadeur reel.. much more productivity than with texas rigs and spoons Quote
cdaggett Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Congrats on finding the fun of lure fishing! Quote
jason41987 Posted July 31, 2013 Author Posted July 31, 2013 this really is so much more fun than throwing a line out and waiting... in fact, this bridge i sometimes fish under, theres some guy who sets up 7 different polls with lines in every direction.. just one individual taking up about a quarter of the entire fishing area and catching nothing... kind of makes me angry because its selfish and inconsiderate to completely hog the best fishing spot on bait that doesnt even work in this lake Quote
