Curtis B. Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Well, even though it's embarrassing, I wanted to get on the board... lol. I had about an hour this morning and decided to stop at a little pond that was stocked earlier this summer... and the result: 5.5 inches... I think that is my personal record for smallest bass! 3 Quote
Nice_Bass Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Nice fish all- I am actually holding mine out...but will do an update soon enough... One thing though, and even though this is all in good fun, is to have some specific standards with measurements. i.e. mouth closed, etc. For the future it may be best- post it at the first post. Nice_Bass Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 post of the small one- hoping to get this guy culled if I can make it on the water Thursday and will post the rest. 16.875 may not be on the water though until the weekend. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted August 14, 2013 Super User Posted August 14, 2013 You guys are doing great up there. I am going to have move up North in the summer. LOL, because down here its pitiful. The heat and humidity make you feel like your in a convection oven all day. 1 Quote

Super User Shane J Posted August 15, 2013 Super User Posted August 15, 2013 Hey, Mars, not to be nit-picky or anything, but in the essence of keeping everyone on the same page, I believe you're measuring your fish wrong. The measurement is to the shortest part of the tail. Measure to the indent on the tail, NOT to the ends of it. Like I said, I don't care, but to be fair to all. Quote

Really, others don't even have a picture of a whole fish but you have to single me out? That's fine, I am not going to argure and to be fair to everyone, I'm out. Good luck to everyone else! Quote
Super User Shane J Posted August 15, 2013 Super User Posted August 15, 2013 No, you're not! I just want everyone to do it the same way is all. Quote
Dramer77 Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 why would you measure to the shortest part of the tail? that makes no sense 1 Quote
NEjitterbugger Posted August 15, 2013 Author Posted August 15, 2013 why would you measure to the shortest part of the tail? that makes no sense If you look at Nice_Bass' post on the last page you see him make a comment about next month we get a bit stricter and all fish must be measured with their mouths closed (the proper way). If you look at the picture he posted there isn't one part of the tail that sticks out more than the other, that would be the reason why. I don't think anyone has measured with the mouth closed and to the shortest part of the tail though besides Nice_Bass Quote
NEjitterbugger Posted August 15, 2013 Author Posted August 15, 2013 Got two that will cull, not by much but will cull... I call the one on the top 16 (it is shifted left an inch) and the other one 15.5 17.5" 16" 16" 16" 15.5" Total 81" Quote

I don't think anyone has measured with the mouth closed and to the shortest part of the tail though besides Nice_Bass Unfortunately we do not have live wells or even boats for that matter. Not to mention we all often fish by ourselves, have to somehow hold the fish with one hand while taking a picture with the other. I don't have a boat and I get very upset when I have a "mud fish" by the time I try do get a decent picture. I think some are asking above and beyond mouth closed, symmetrical tail. With the given conditions, it should be end to end (mouth open or closed and to the end of the tail), full picture, as best as you can. Beggers can't be choosers. I'll be darned if I have to keep the fish out of the water, flopping around on ground, longer than I already have too. If we don't take care of the fish, there is no fun competition. 1 Quote
Super User Shane J Posted August 15, 2013 Super User Posted August 15, 2013 I thought it was pretty common, when measuring a fish, to measure to the inside of the "V" of a bass's tail. It is how every tournament fish is measured, and how I measure mine. After I get my length, I'll control the fish by re-lipping it and holding it, hence open mouths in my pics. Fish is out of water for not more than 30 seconds. I don't care how you all wanna measure your fish, I'm still doing it the right way. 1 Quote

Super User Shane J Posted August 15, 2013 Super User Posted August 15, 2013 I know. That's what I said. I take the measurement with the mouth closed first. Quote
NEjitterbugger Posted August 15, 2013 Author Posted August 15, 2013 Next month all fish will be measured the same way however that may be, that's for sure. I know it is a competition but let's get real here and get back to FISHING, not measuring. Everyone please start giving suggestions that will make this thread better for next month... 1 Quote
MARsSPEED Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I know. That's what I said. I take the measurement with the mouth closed first. Well, thanks for being good sport. I don't want to risk injuring the fish so I will not be able to compete until I buy the proper fish rule. All of you please participate in the other comp I started today as that should be fun as well. Quote

Super User BassinLou Posted August 15, 2013 Super User Posted August 15, 2013 I have been watching this discussion unfold about the fish measurements through out the day. When this competition was started a few months ago down South, we all assumed it was total fish length. We cannot control what the fish decides to do when we snap the picture. During a real tourney, it's very convenient to do a quick measure for tournament size legality. But during this friendly, and I emphasize "friendly" competition, we are asking to take a tape measure out, extend it, position a creature that is starving for oxygen to stay still while we take out a phone or camera to then take picture that is legible, is a very daunting task, to say the least. Then if possible pose with fish. You guys can run your tourney how you see fit, but do not lose perspective that this is for FUN!! I agree with NEjigger, next month get together and fine tune a set of guidelines that everyone can follow easily. This friendly contest is one way to bring us closer together not have us bickering over 1/4 of an inch! With that said. August is half way through already. Best of luck to all of you. 3 Quote
