Super User buzzed bait Posted July 29, 2013 Super User Posted July 29, 2013 So I was browsing WalMart friday night and they had an Abu Garcia Black Max baitcasting combo priced at $12.98. Obviously this was wrong, but the guy checked it and it rang up $12.98 so I snagged it and ran. I've looked it over really well and there is nothing wrong with it! The rod is a 6'6" Medium action. My question is what would you use this set up for? What would be the best line/fishing styles with this rig? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 29, 2013 Super User Posted July 29, 2013 Pretty much anything you'd throw for bass in the rods stated lure weight range...senkos, spinnerbaits, topwaters, buzzbaits, texas rigs, jigs, spoons, etc. I wouldn't use it in the heaviest slop weed cover, but I wouldn't be afraid of most weed lines. 1 Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted July 29, 2013 Author Super User Posted July 29, 2013 Thanks guys! I couldn't quite believe it myself, but for that price I was running to the register! Let me ask this follow up, would you prefer to use this rod/setup for topwater (buzzbait, poppers, spooks, etc) or perhaps for jerkbait, crankbait, spinnerbait? Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 29, 2013 Super User Posted July 29, 2013 Medium action or Medium power? It makes a difference. Edit: Of course you could sell it to me for $13.00 and make a little money on the deal. Naturally I would expect you to pay shipping. Really an excellent find. Congrats. Quote

Either topwater poppers/spooks or jerkbaits. I like a longer rod for buzzbaits to help get them to the surface and I like longer rods for spinnerbaits and cranks as well. Personally it would be a spook rod for me. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted July 29, 2013 Super User Posted July 29, 2013 It's the "Black Max" rod too correct? Then it's a medium flex rod with a med/fast tip. That rod reel combo can be used for just about anything less than a 1/2 oz IMO. Try throwing finesse jigs or senkos, lipless CB's and 3/8 spinnerbaits. At $12.98 I will try just about anything. Quote

Yes it is a black max rod as well and you nailed the specs. Thanks to all for all the info. I was so stoked at the price that I just grabbed it, paid and ran to my car before they realized it was WAYYYYYYY off on the price! Not that I needed a new rod/reel combo, but for that price I had to. After a brief explanation, my fiance was even on board! Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted July 30, 2013 Super User Posted July 30, 2013 If it isn't of the quality you like I would think it would make a nice gift for a family member or friend that is looking for a decent starter setup. Probably not going to be able to find many Birthday or Christmas presents like that for the money considering that may only buy you a few hardbaits or bags of plastics. Of course if you want to keep and have a need for it by all means hang on to it. Just throwing it out there... Quote

stk Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Great find, I would throw anything you want on there. Just as felix77 mentioned, keep it kind of light. It's a great rod and reel to learn how to throw a baitcaster on. Hopefully you'll get bit in the process. Good luck and have fun! One of the best things I did was follow Glenn's videos on youtube. His flippin and pitchin video helped train my thumb and his how to cast a baitcaster video was pretty good too. ACtually all of his videos. Anyways, if you are already comfortable with a baitcaster then never mind me and carry on. Quote

This X's 2. $13 bucks? That's insane! I like mine after paying $70 for it but I'd like it a lot more for $13. Quote
