k1ssmybass Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 So I returned my duckett 6'9 MH which i think isnt all that great and used the money and then some to go towards a GLoomis IMX 7' MH. To be honest i feel like the loomis really isnt anymore sensitive than the duckett, even for being 270$ after tax. I need a rod that can handle 1/2 oz jigs and T-rigs without feeling like i have a garbage bag on the end of my line everytime i pop. I want a rod thats sensitive to where i can feel the most subtle bites. I wanna be able to feel the bottom. I've been looking at the dobyns line up and i'm hearing good things about them, but would they be worth returning the loomis and paying ANOTHER 75$ for the upgrade? or do you have a suggestion of a rod that fits the criteria: lightweight SENSITIVE reliable good for heavier worms and jigs. Super User rockchalk06 Posted July 29, 2013 Super User Posted July 29, 2013 After trying 3 different rods and searching for almost a year, I have settled on the Dobyns Champion Extreme 745. If you want a bit cheaper route the Dobyns Champion 736 would be my next pick. Quote
paul25 Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 i'm a dobyns fan as well i bought one at the beginning of the year for football jigs and now i own 4 of them. i really love these rods i have the dobyns champion 7'3 H for jigs and t-rigs Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted July 30, 2013 Super User Posted July 30, 2013 dobyns champion extreme 745 would be perfect. it's one of my favorite jig rods. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted July 30, 2013 Super User Posted July 30, 2013 Loomis GLX Rep Sample - Google it, get the 894C or 895C or 854C if you like to stay below 7'5. I own the 894C and 854C hands down awesome 1/2 oz and up is the sweet spot. Love it, light and has the backbone to get that fish in the boat. I always hear the sweet spot from Loomis is the GLX and NRX, everything below is meh. I do own a GL2 I got for a real good deal (893C), definitely not GLX sensitive for sure, I'd say just average but the biggest plus was how comfortable it was to fish with (handle). You can get the GLX around that budget of you have. I don't tend to buy all high end rods, but when it comes to bottom contact, I will put the money there. I didn't go with the NRX because it was not on sale, plus I found I liked the feel and looks of the GLX slightly more. Still I might pull the trigger before the end of the year on a 893C NRX or 895 NRX. Quote
sarcazmo Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 I have the dobyns DX745 and so far have been underwhelmed. I'd take a STRONG look @ the KLX series or an ALX rod... My KLX is every bit as good as my dx744. (For some reason I like my 744 way more than my 745). No need to spend a huge amount of money for a fantastic rod. I will say the dobyns 60 dollar replacement is amazing though. (havent used it just a nice option to protect your investment) If you do decide to go dobyns send me a pm and I'll give you some info. motodmast Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 DX745 is one beast of a rod. the power thats in that rod is prettty amazing. rods is more than sensitive enough for me, i cal tell when im dragging a football head from rock bottom to a snand bar and back to rock again, and can feel when something is on my bait, like a piece of grass. any bass under 4lbs dosent even have a chance at fighting, i got 17lb fluoro and my drag locked down and just set the hook and never look back, drag them all the way in Quote
Brian Needham Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 Dobyns dx 745 or 784ml............PM sent. Quote
martintheduck Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 I don't buy into the g. loomis talk quite yet. I've used a few of the gl2's and a gl3 (i think it was) and didn't really LOVE it. I was looking for a jigging rod some months ago and was pointed to the Cumara. I didn't really think Shimano would have an AWESOME rod for sale... I figured it was going to be some regular ole' rod with a high price tag. Read a bunch of reviews and decided I'd drop the $250 on one. a 7'2 MH x-fst tip. Let me say - IT IS LIGHT. IT IS SENSITIVE. It is exactly what I wanted. I paired it with a new gen RevoSTX and can fish it all day with 1/2oz jigs....no problem. My buddy uses some old school loomis broomstick rods for jigging and we traded for a minute.... he started laughing when he held mine saying "dang thats so light." Feel everything even the slightest tap. I can't speak on Dobyns line cause I've never touched one. I just wanted to drop in to point out the cumara fits the bill for exactly what you're looking for. The GL series is the low end for G.Loomis so I am not surprised that you weren't impressed. I think they overprice that series of rods. The G.Loomis GLX series is one of the best for sensitivity. The NRX rods are beyond the pale, including the price. Quote
buzzfrog Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 I love the *** 13 7'3 for my heavier trigs and casting jigs Quote

I agree. Under the IMX line of rods, most folks aren't impressed. Often times they are left holding a heavy, average build rod that doesn't wow them for the money. I almost wish they would cut out there lower tier rods but some like the thought of owning a Loomis regardless of performance. Assuming a max limit of around $300 I would look for a cumara, champion extreme, or the megabass xx line of rods. I have all 3 and think very highly of all of them. They are all great rods with good sensitivity and power for your jigs and Texas rigged plastics. If warranty is a high priority I would say the cumara, dobyns, and megabass (in that order) from best to worst. Quote

Definitely what he says...I only got the GL2 because it was a super deal 100 bucks even...so I said why not? At this price it isn't that bad, but still not the "best overall deal". In my opinion they are selling the name and the builtin cost for the warranty and Wild Card system. You have to keep that in mind. Definitely can't compare the GL2, GL3, Mossyback and IMX against the Champion Extreme. Quote
sprint286 Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 I would look at the denali noirwood 7' worm and jig rod. They also have some more budget friendly rods In the jadewood and rosewood lines. They are all great rods and are very well built. Quote
Brian Needham Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 If warranty is a high priority I would say the cumara, dobyns, and megabass (in that order) from best to worst. what is the cumara warrantee? I have snapped a Dobyns under a boat cleat before and $60 gets me a brand new one, cant beat a warrantee that covers "dummy" lol Quote
martintheduck Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 what is the cumara warrantee? I have snapped a Dobyns under a boat cleat before and $60 gets me a brand new one, cant beat a warrantee that covers "dummy" lol Cumara warranty - Lifetime replacement. From what I gathered (reading the warranty request form) it covers all breaks and malfunctions EXCEPT user error - EX: Hitting rod tip on fan blade, closing in car door, stepping on it. All you pay for is shipping to Shimano in California. From what I've read on another forum, just so long as the break looks "natural" they will ship a replacement to you ASAP, free of charge (you will be out $the $20 it costs to ship to them though). Another thing to note - Shimano SAYS they won't warranty a rod purchased from any store without a physical store location - IE: Ebay sellers. So basically, for $20 they replace it. Hope that helps! Quote
Brian Needham Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 sounds like "manufacture defect" you pay shipping. which is the same as Dobyns, but if you go retard(like I do), another $40 (since you already have to pay the $20 for shipping) gets you new plastic on the handle no matter what. Quote
jignfule Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 G.Loomis GLX 844c, Very versatile, a great jig and worm rod Quote

I have snapped a Dobyns under a boat cleat before and $60 gets me a brand new one, cant beat a warrantee that covers "dummy" lol From my understanding ... though I haven't had to use it ever ... is that it is an over the counter warranty. For instance your rod breaks and you take it to a local authorized dealer, they will swap out the broken rod for a new rod if it is the same model. If there isn't a local store close by that has the rod line or the specific rod you then have to deal with shimano directly. I don't know if they require the buyer to pay for shipping to get the rod to them or if they will send a postage paid label. I do know they don't charge a "replacement fee" like say dobyns does of $60 ... at least from what I have found. The most I can see you having to pay is shipping to get the rod to Shimano but it may best refer to their website or speak to a Rep that understands the process. I do know they require a receipt but at the same time they aren't sticklers if you can't provide one. Quote
BigMoneyGrip Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 You might look at the Lamiglass Infinity Bass 735. I use it for big plastics and jigs. The lure weight goes up to 1 1/2. I love mine. Quote
Grantman83 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 My first loomis was a mossyback and I was less than impressed unfortunately. I have several dx's but they were got through shrewd deals and watching used boards. The 745 as mentioned is a beast..... 1 Quote
Boogey Man Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 I have a Pinnacle Perfecta I won here a few years ago. It's the 7ft heavy model. It's an absolute beast of a rod. Extremely well made, perfect fit and finish. Very light for a 7ft heavy road. You can usually find them at a pretty good discount on Amazon.com. Quote

Took them back and was given 2 news no questions asked. I have Loomis and St. Croix and the Shimano warranty is the best. For 1/2 jigs the 72MHXF is the way to go. 1 Quote
