Super User clayton86 Posted July 28, 2013 Super User Posted July 28, 2013 Caught it in the niagara river near grand island bridge seen them all over. Never seen or caught one before this was one if the smaller ones Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted July 28, 2013 Super User Posted July 28, 2013 Looks like a big golden shiner to me. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted July 28, 2013 Author Super User Posted July 28, 2013 Some were the gold color some were bright silver some were brown all had deep red fins. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted July 28, 2013 Author Super User Posted July 28, 2013 Googled Rudd I will have to agree that's what they are Quote
Kevin22 Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 Ever try pike/pickerel fishing? one of the best baits there is... catch one about 10" long and put a 6/0 circle in its dorsal fin. Very hardy fish, unfortunately they are impossible to find around me. All we can get here are golden shiners, which are very close but no red fins and are a smaller size. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted July 28, 2013 Super User Posted July 28, 2013 Looks like a typical golden shiner. Rudds and shiners look very similar, a description is here: "Two characteristics can distinguish the golden shiner from all other minnows: (1) the lateral line has a pronounced downward curve, with its lowest point just above the pelvic fins; and (2) there is a fleshy keel lacking scales on the belly between the pelvic fins and the base of the anal fin. The lack of scales on the keel is important to differentiate the golden shiner from the very similar-looking rudd" Quote
Kevin22 Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 Quoting wikipedia? It is a rudd, no doubt about it. Red fins give it away. Not to mention that fish looks to be about 10" and he said it is one of the smaller ones. Ever see a 12"+ golden shiner? Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted July 28, 2013 Author Super User Posted July 28, 2013 Yeah I was roughly 10" maybe a touch bigger. There were some swimming around that were 16"+ easy from a distance I thought they were bass cruising the grass flat I foul hooked that one with a spinnerbait actually. Quote
BuffaloBass716 Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 Yeah Mr. common Rudd, I caught a 16" one in the niagara river and I guess it is an invasive fish... I didnt know that at the time and threw it back in anyway Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted July 28, 2013 Author Super User Posted July 28, 2013 Yeah I threw that one back they are all over around grand Island Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted August 1, 2013 Super User Posted August 1, 2013 Cut them up and they make great catfish bait. Quote
