justinm811 Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 So I was fishing with a Senko for the first time today on a wacky weedless hook. The fish were biting but twice when I went to set the hook I only came back with the hook no Senko. Then another time I was casting and the senko flew right off the hook. Need some help figuring out what I did wrong. Quote
Loop_Dad Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 Are you using a O-ring? I don't do wacky much, but I use a small rubber band for hair from CSV instead of buying o-ring from fishing shop, which is enough for me. Some use shirnk-tube. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted July 28, 2013 Super User Posted July 28, 2013 Are you casting it too hard? Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted July 28, 2013 Super User Posted July 28, 2013 Panfish are strong enough to rip them off the hook if you're not harnessing it some how. If it were bass, you're setting the hook before they engulf it. If you hook through the body you need to move the hook around so it doesnt continue to pull and rip the same spot. It's best you try an o-ring or similar to get the most of your senkos Quote
Comfortably Numb Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 As said o-ring or shrink tubing is a neccesity with a real GYBC Senko. Probably sunfish stealing your bait. They hot hard and run with it. They USUALLY are more of a tap tap tap. Bass is usually a single tap and they move off slow with it. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted July 28, 2013 Super User Posted July 28, 2013 It is rare for me to miss a bass on a wacky rig. As mentioned earlier, they usually take it and swim off. A sweeping hook-set or just reeling and keeping tension on the fish does the trick. Pan fish will sometimes take a bait, but they are most often easy to tell from a bass. Just ignoring them is my recommendation. Even without some type of mechanical reinforcement throwing a Senko off while casting has only happened a couple of times, and has always been user error on my part- whether using spinning or baitcast gear. With practice this will not be an issue. Good luck. Quote
SudburyBasser Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 I've had bass steal Senkos even with the o-ring! What size are you using? I've found that occasionally going down to a 4" Senko encourages more hookups as the bass are obviously a little closer to the hook. I don't know what size hook you're using but I find using a 3/0 EWG on a wacky rig works well. Quote
Preytorien Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 I use a small zip tie wrapped around my Senkos. I was having the same problem, now I don't. Use the smallest zip ties available, and try as best to match your zip tie to your Senko color. Seems to work for me and I've had good success with it. Quote
dddyfz27 Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 I use to have the same problem. A senko use to only last for one fish until i started using o-rings. Look on ebay. I bought 100 of them for $6 shipped i believe. Quote
Kevin22 Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 A wacky tool and 50 o-rings will last you a long time. When you feel the worm sliding in the o-ring after a couple fish, take it out of the ring, put the ring in your pocket, and hook the worm right in the middle. The next fish will take it either way and this way you keep the o-ring for the next bait. I've been using a pack of 25 for 2 years now. Quote
AJMichigan Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 I dont wacky rig, no thanks. I've never had an issue with getting bites/catching fish using a texas rigged senko/crawler, just having a slight issue setting the hook. Too risky around here to fish anything weedless, you're going to lose it Quote
Super User tomustang Posted July 28, 2013 Super User Posted July 28, 2013 O rings, after a few fish I inspect the senko and if it's not torn enough ill remove it, not a fan of feeding fish soft plastics. Quote
