Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted July 27, 2013 Super User Posted July 27, 2013 Of all the surprises in my life. This takes the cake. My Grandmom wants a piece to keep by her bed to feel safer. We went shopping at a local gun shop today. She looked at the Derringers and decided they were too small. She looked at the ARs and decided they were to complicated. She is deciding between a Mossberg pistol grip with riot pump in 20 gauge, with a heat shield a door buster. A keltec .380, that she is unsure of. A .44magnum and .454 Casull both of which she LOVED, because Dirty Harry is awesome. She is 80 years old and looking at 2 freaking wrist breakers. She also is gonna have me take her to the range once she makes up her mind. My other Grandmom on the other hand was a freaking gun nut before she died. In her last 8 years she carried a shotgun cane everywhere she went. Before that she had my 6ft 7in 350 lb ex Michigan State Trooper grandpa that went everywhere she did as protection. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted July 28, 2013 Super User Posted July 28, 2013 The .454 recoil will knock her on her azz If she insists on a handgun, may I suggest a Judge with .410/.45 colt. The 45 has plenty of power without the recoil of the .454 2 Quote
nick76 Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 She ought to take a good look at a solid 38 revolver. Nice large round without all the wrist pain. Revolver so there is no problem or complication like most people see with a semi auto. Just my 2 cents and I am glad she wants to take her safety seriously. 1 Quote

Super User Crestliner2008 Posted August 1, 2013 Super User Posted August 1, 2013 Another vote for the .38 Special revolver. 1 Quote
jimmykm21 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 .22 LR revolver or a reliable semiauto would be a good choice for an 80 year old woman I'll also add the pistol grip shotgun is ridiculous for her to think about in a 20 gauge If she is dead set on a shotgun have her buy one with a butt stock so she can shoulder and aim the d**n thing. A 410 gauge loaded with buck shot would be her best bet in a shotgun. Quote

That will break a hip real quick LOL if she didn't need a walker before she shot that she will after LOL j/k It is so funny tho! Quote
Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted August 4, 2013 Super User Posted August 4, 2013 Hey guys. I'm personally not a gun guy so I can't offer any legitimate input on what gun your grandma should get but I saw the title of this thread and it made me think of this story that I read a while back. I don't think it's true. More of an urban legend but I think it's pretty applicable in this situation. http://www.snopes.com/crime/justice/carrypermit.asp Quote
Brian Needham Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 how about a 9mm with a couple of happy sticks? nice, low recoil, with plenty of firepower to fend off anything granny comes into. Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted August 4, 2013 Author Super User Posted August 4, 2013 Granny is packing my single action .22 Magnum revolver, around her house until she makes a decision. She may end up just keeping that. I don't know yet. Quote
nick76 Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 That would have been my second choice for her. That is nice little revolver as well. Quite a few women I know carry them when they are shy about a larger caliber. Quote
RyneB Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 Bersa Thunder .380 would be a good choice. I have seen a few older woman shoot this gun with no problems. Quote

RyneB Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 So, you like looking at older women? not really, but when you're at a range and an 80 yr old woman is next to you. You pay attention and apprectiate the fact they're still sending rounds down range. Quote
