hey.. i had this idea of making a tackle box out of a military surplus ammo can.. im not sure how id do this, but one idea is that people sell sectioned organizers in layers for ammo cans of various sizes.. so i had the idea of buying a 50bmg or 20mm ammo can and the organizers to fashion a tackle box

heres an example for 5.56mm cans http://www.amazon.com/MTM-Ammo-Can-Organizer-Black/dp/B0074024OO

what gave me this idea.. is ive been thinking of buying a new motorcycle.. sort of an all purpose super reliable dual sport i can do everything with.. like an old yamaha XT500, or honda XL500 (you get the idea) and fashion a bracket to mount ammo cans as saddlebags.. BUT i want the ammo cans to be removable so that i can pack a couple in a "bugout bag" fashion, or use one as a tackle box that i could hook onto the bracket and go fishing, get to where im going and remove the ammo can to to take with me as my tackle box

so.. what do you guys think of this idea?.. of course, if im using a motorcycle to get to my fishing spots im going to have to buy a four piece rod and fashion a leather  holster to stick it into.. kind of like the old rifle holsters the WWII motorcycles had on them

Why not just buy the Flambeau or Plano Marine Dry Boxes? Serves the same purpose, and they are built for it already. I have one I use when I live bait fish in saltwater.

because i can get the ammo cans really cheap, theyre easier to drill, weld, etc for adding components id need to make them quickly detachable without tools, and they look cooler

I fished with a guy, resident of Canada who had the same idea. But he put all his baits in the amno can loose. They were bigger baits for pike. & lake trout but all intertwined. He would pull a big mess of baits out & shake it till they started to separate. Took a while till the bait he wanted to shake loose.

then i guess i should buy or make a divided organizer for it so i wont have to worry about that, itll keep them separate, i can only seem to find them for 5.56mm ammo cans though.. not sure of the dimensions of these, but im not sure it would make a good tackle box. maybe though

hmm.. you know what i should do?.. just get those clear plastic compartmented "stowaway" boxes with the lids.. then i can organize different types of lures, or lures i use to target specific fish into their own boxes, or get a large one to use as a tackle box thatll fit inside it, that i can take out

Take pictures of the organizer that they make for the 5.56 can. Get a .50 can and some plate steel or aluminum. Carbon steel plate is cheaper but will rust if not primed and painted. Cut your plate steel to the dimensions you want and tack weld it.

I like the concept but it seems like the tackle box would be kind of heavy.  Maybe I'm wrong though.  If you go through with it post some pics and let us see it.

You have definitely got my curiosity up on this. I want one of these. If you want me to prototype one for ya. Let me know. I got sheet steel on Carbon, Aluminum, Stainless, and some crappy tin. I also got stainless and aluminum diamond plate in various sizes. Got a gig rig with a freak box on it. So I can weld anything. Tell me what you want and I'll even ship it to you.

you ever see those clear plastic "tackle kits".. they have a handle on them, compartments, lids.. well the compartmentalized containers theyre in are only about 2" thick.. inside a 20mm ammo can i could pack a number of these boxes inside, categorized by the type of fishing im doing, and just take these smaller boxes out from the inside of the ammo can / saddlebags

http://www.amazon.com/Plano-Molding-Adjustable-Compartment-Connectable/dp/B0063KD0HQ/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1374762678&sr=8-10&keywords=stowaway+plano

20mm ammo can dimensions 17 3/8 x 7 1/2 x 14

plano stowaway case with handle 14 1/2 x 2 x 11

so i could fit three of these big ones and a decent number of smaller ones inside... probably be better than trying to fit an entire tackle box inside the ammo can, or carrying the ammo can while fishing.. but as the motorcycle is dual sport, and off-road capable i could drive it right up to a lot of the places i fish.. but this would be better than a build in organizer or removable strays as this will keep tackle in their respective compartments while the bike moves around, goes over bumps, etc, allows me to carry a smaller, lighter package to the shore line, and the ammo can offers the external protection from damage

beats throwing everything into the glove box of my truck.. and since im going to be getting the motorcycle as my primary means of transportation for all seasons the separate boxes packed inside the ammo can will allow me to transport easier
