BuffaloBass716 Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I live next to a golf corse and Ive always wondered if there would be bass in some of the ponds. Ive seen some people on youtube fish in golf corse ponds but Ive never put a line in the water at my local pond haha, probably becauce Ill look like an idiot. Is there anyway to tell if there is fish in the pond without fishing for them? The pond I would try is only half on the golf corse and the other half is next to a public field, so it would be okay to try. Ive always been curious, just to see... Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted July 23, 2013 Super User Posted July 23, 2013 Nothing ventured nothing gained. Especially in bass fishing. Quote
stk Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 stick of dynamite? LoL, I don't think it would hurt to try fishing the gofl course pond, how long has it been there? Quote
SpinnerbaitSlinger Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I've been told that birds are a good sign for fish in ponds. I usually try to look for smaller baitfish. Did that last weekend and had some luck. Quote

derekxec Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 i have found some of my biggest bass 10lbs+ on a golf course right down the street from me in the smallest lakes on the course lol....they usually stock them to keep the water alive or so...and mostly no one fishes them also be careful if the course is open we have had golf balls hit the trees above us and land at our feet..now they ripped up the golf course and made it into a park and took out all the lakes and made a big canal and stocked it with tiny bass was illegal to fish there anyway but they just tell you to leave lol Quote

Super User AK-Jax86 Posted July 23, 2013 Super User Posted July 23, 2013 Golf course yield some of the biggest fish it's definitely worth checkin out Quote
Mccallister25 Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 If permission is granted, check it out. Some buddies and myself fish a GC pond local to me, and there are some beasts in there. More times than not, a golf course pond holds fish. As stated above, I believe it keeps everything healthy. Quote
Brian Needham Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 its a sure bet to have fish...........be sure you ask permission and be polite and stay out of peoples way. Quote
mg4u2nv Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 golf courses are great for bass!!! My favorite honey hole is a lake in between an apartment complex and a golf course. Caught many 4lb and 5lbers there! Give it a shot! Matt Quote
BuffaloBass716 Posted July 24, 2013 Author Posted July 24, 2013 UPDATE: Heres a picture of the pond from google earth. http://goo.gl/maps/Y9IVZ I walked down to the pond just to see what it looked like in person, it is pretty shallow at the bank, but its not that weedy. I seen some frogs around the shallows too. Tomorrow im going to try it. Quote
bgraham91 Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 I've fished 4 diff golf courses and they all had fish in them and all but one had good fish(3-6lb) in them. And I'd suggest going at night because unless your member of the course, the chances of them saying you can fish it will be very slim. Quote

Those members pay money for that enjoyment. Why do you think it is your right to get that enjoyment for free? The members at the golf course I work at, are highly ticked because of people with your mentality. They(myself included) used to catch very nice bass, and slab crappie until people thought they could be clever at night......that is until they saw my headlights! LOL if you have to cross a fence or a property line to get there, you don't belong there. Quote

Now that I have a boat now I rarely fish any ponds now.

MY HEADLIGHTS, would be me rolling up in my truck with the cops serving trespassing notices to people fishing on the golf course. and it does not matter if you Catch and release or not.

The pond is only partically on the golf course, the whole bottom side of the pond is part of a public park, you can walk freely on the field. The only other problem is that they dont cut the grass close to the bank and it is kind of over grown, only some spots around the pond are clear enough to fish. Quote

Just put on some pants and walk through it. No pain no gain. The best spots are usually the ones that are the hardest to get to. Quote

I alwalys tell my friends... The more convenient, the less fish there is. OP, you're ok on in that pond. I've fished ponds well into the course compared to that. You will be asked to leave is the worse case, but i don't see that happening there. Quote
Brian Needham Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 . You will be asked to leave is the worse case, . this is 100% wrong. while true, if he fishes the part of the pond not on the golf course, but the golf course can still own the land or have rights to the water/land. One day, yall are going to fish the wrong golf course and have to deal with police. I know you all fish golf courses and think it is fine, but you are breaking the law, you are tresspassing. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. People do not pay large sums of money to join a golf club to have teenagers/riff raff/non memebers lining the banks........if you want your own private pond, build one!(just like the golf course did) Another angle of why this is so important....if you fall in, get snake bit, get hit in the head with a golf ball, gator bit (in the south) all 4 of which can kill you, your parents will be looking to sue someone. Its too bad cause you were tresspassing. I am telling you all this for you and the course's safety OP, I am a golf course superintendent...I deal with this everyday ....you can take my advice and ask, or take people's advice that have no clue and are urging you to break the law. Your choice. Good Luck! Quote

Suggesting anyone trespass or otherwise break the law is foolish, and not allowed here. Quote

Your choice. Good Luck! Brian, you obviously have more experience than most of us. The golf course I fish at may just be friendly or don't really care. Honestly, i've never been asked to leave and talk to many golfers as they are leaving with friendly conversation. This isn't the case with every golf course. It wont hurt to ask prior to fishing in it. Quote
derekxec Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 ive fished some courses they didnt care and some they just told us to leave...we mostly did it illegally but we knew the consequences if we got caught but then we were younger so we did some stupid stuff lol Quote
BuffaloBass716 Posted July 25, 2013 Author Posted July 25, 2013 UPDATE: I finally tried the pond and had some luck! I threw a frog and got some hits but couldnt hook them. Then I tried a blue trick worm and got a nice 14" bass. Kept trying and got a few small rock bass (I was surpirsed with that). Nobody came to tell me to leave and the spot I was at is out of the way for everything so its great! Im definitely going to try again. Thanks for urging me to try it everyone! Quote
