Corey1123 Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 What is a good beginner fishing pole for bass fishing Quote
aceman387 Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I use all spinning outfits and my first rod I bought was a st Croix triumph 7ft medium power. Its a nice multi purpose rod for the money. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 23, 2013 Super User Posted July 23, 2013 You didn't give us any information such as age, fishing experience. type of water. weight of lures, or amount you can spend. I am going to assume young, no experience and $150 max. A spinning outfit will have you fishing almost immediately. Half dozen casts and you will have the casting technique down (but probably not accuracy). Cheap good rods: Berkley Lightning Shock or Shimano Sellus. If these are too much, look at a Berkley Cherrywood. Cheap good reels: Shimano Sonora or Pflueger Trion GX-7 The Shock/Trion will have you out the door for less than $90 with tax....about $75 if you can find a Walmart having a sale on the Lightning. My local Walmarts never do. Approximately $10 more will get you a Pflueger President...an excellent reel for the money. I would suggest a 6'6"-7' Medium Fast (or MH Fast) for a first rod. This length, power and action make for a very versatile rod. You will get a lot more specific replies if you would supply more information. If I haven't welcomed you to the forum before, then 1 Quote
TeachMeHowToFish Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Honestly a simple rod and reel combo by ugly stick for like $30-$50 at WalMart will be fine. I fished for over a year using a 5'6 Ugly stick catching a good amount of fish. Most of those fish being Peacock bass since I live in Miami, and an Ugly stick will last you a life time Quote

aqualkinbush Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 First off, lets get this out of the way, make sure you go through all the articles. They are absolute gold and invaluable to anglers of all experience levels. Second, the advice you got above from new2bc4bass on rod and reel selection is pretty good. Third about colors in dark waters you can't go wrong with chartreuse. Also you said your in Louisiana so craw imitations would probably be pretty good for you, going with this logic red and other craw colors would probably be good bets. Good Luck and welcome to Bass Resource. Quote
BassResource.com Advertiser FD. Posted July 24, 2013 BassResource.com Advertiser Posted July 24, 2013 Corey, first welcome to the forums. Walmart caries a Berkley Lightning Shock spinning rod for about $50. I would recommend a 7' MH (medium heavy). Add to that a $30 - 50 spinning reel. Spool it with 30lb braid. ( I prefer Power Pro) Read through the articles section and pay particular attention to: Tying a palomar knot Texas Rigging soft plastics. Fishing in dark stained water, always use a dark color. Black with Blue flakes is always a good choice for dark water. Feel free to send me a PM if you have more questions. 1 Quote

Super User WRB Posted July 24, 2013 Super User Posted July 24, 2013 Ik how to tie a palomar knot and set a Texas rig thats what I have set up nowWhat rod/reel do you currently have? Do you prefer bait casting or spinning? What is your budget approximately?Tom Quote
OkeechobeeAngler Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 As others have stated a Berkley Lightning rod will work great for you in either spinning or casting. Quote
Corey1123 Posted July 25, 2013 Author Posted July 25, 2013 I would say my budget just for right now would be a 130 right now ....I have a Shakespeare combo right now till I can get a good bait cast reel or a good spinning reel Quote

Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted July 25, 2013 Super User Posted July 25, 2013 Academy has the ETHOS rods for right at 60 dollars. IMO they preform every bit as good as the rods in the mid hundred dollar range do. I prefer them to my Powell Endurance rods. The sensitivity between the two seems to be about the same to me. Like others said. Read the articles. I was in the same boat you are, when I started bass fishing 6 years ago. I had to learn it all on my own. This site and these forums are what taught me how to bass fish. Soak up all the information you can from here. Quote
Corey1123 Posted July 27, 2013 Author Posted July 27, 2013 This is the beginner pole I chose to use it is a quantum va100s with a Pro 61/2 im6 medium heavy rod. and I was wondering what kind of bait can I use on this set up? Quote
Renesis07 Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 I'm not necessarily a beginner, but wanted a medium action pole to use for light plastics and drop shot and didn't feel like dropping money on a st Croix or other brands. I went to Dicks Sporting Goods and actually found a really nice Diawa rod and reel combo for like, $60 or something around that. Honestly, probably my favorite fishing pole I have ever owned. I beat the hell out of this pole and it holds up like a champ, I feel every strike, accuracy is spot on. Wish I had more info but I'm at work, if you want any more info, just shoot me a PM and I'll take a look when I get home. Just picked it up a few weeks back so I'm sure it's still out in stores. Or, as suggested above, lightning rods are good for a beginner rod. I've owned 2 of them, never had an issue. I currently have one I use mainly for spinner baits/buzzbaits. It's a casting reel however, so I was having a hard time with lighter tackle, hence the spinning rod setup I just bought. Quote
Capt.Bob Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 The Lightning rod or a couple bucks more and get a BPS Bionic Blade, excellent rod for the money and almost indestructible ethier one in a MH,, !! Top it with a Sedona reel and you will have a nice outfit at a very reasonable price!! This will be much better than an inexpensive combo and very little more. If you can spend a little more you can buy a little better, so it goes. Quote
