I'm from SW Pennsylvania. I started "lurking" on this forum about a month ago and finally made an account last week. I currently fish with an older spinning rod, but would like help on choosing a new rod and reel for an affordable price. I used to fish every day or most days out of the week, but took a few years off. This is my first year back and I'm interested in starting primarily bass fishing in the near future. Until I get more knowledge and time I'm happy learning, going when I can, and catching what's available. I wanted to say thank you for having access to these forums and the information presented!

Welcome aboard!

Far as a rod/reel combo you'll need a set price for everyone to go from for suggestions.

Sorry. I need something basic that will last a long time, but do not need anything fancy. I am comfortable spending $50-100 while I'm learning or using my current set-up and spending up to $200-300? in the future.

Thank you

ETA : I was referring to "the future" as in 4-6 years from now.

For spinning there's the Berkeley Rod Shock 7' medium for around $36 and a Shimano Sellus 7"1 medium $39 at walmart online. Both are very good for under $40. For reels the Pflueger President can be had for $50-60 depending on reel size and dealer. You can also look on ebay for cheaper prices from a reputable dealer.

Welcome. I'd probably look at combos from Bass Pro Shop catalogs. They have a variety of prices to choose from. I still have the first spinning rod I ever bought from there, that was a long time ago. Good luck.

Hi there! Welcome to the board! I'm in SW PA too. If you're close you should check out Leopold park lake on route 30 in Imperial. Its a good little spot to practice.

If you're not afraid to go a tad over your budget, I would suggest a Lews speed spool for 99 bucks, paired up with a berkley lightning rod shock series for $40. Spool up with some power pro in 30# test and you're good to go. If you're strict on your budget, check out the Abu Garcia promax combo, or even cheaper, the silvermax or blackmax combos.

ETA - sorry, I just realized you wanted spinning. The above combos are baitcasters. For spinning, my rod reccomendation remains the same. Berkley lightning rod shock series. As for a reel, I use a Mitchell 300xe found at Walmart for $50. I love the reel, although I have been considering something newer like a Lews speed spin or the yet to arrive Mitchell 300PRO. My girlfriend has kind of taken over my 300xe when we go together.

Good luck!

I'm going to Cabelas one day this week. I did look up each of the suggestions mentioned. They currently have a sale on the Berkeley lightning rod. Also, I like the reviews on the Pflueger president. The combo that I liked the most (when accounting the reviews and price) is the Pflueger® Trion GX-7 Spinning Combo $60.

I did read some articles for beginners. I am planning on purchasing:

(Texas Rig tackle) worms, worm hooks, bullet weight

10 lb. monofilament line -if its not included-.

ETA: they only have the 5' ultra light available online. I would like to get atleast 6' and would prefer 6'6"-7' M or MH.

If you're going to Wheeling, remember to check out the "bargain cave" sometimes you can find perfectly good equipment that has been returned and just never restocked. That being said, be cautious; a lot of the stuff in there is junk. Good luck.

I did buy everything that I mentioned in my last post. Even the rod and reel combo (6ft.). I'm not sure when I will be able to get on the water, but I wanted to say thank you -to everyone- for the help!
