Anyone Have A Fish Break Your Reel? Pics

I have, had, a Pflueger Presidential spinning reel and today while fighting a fish my reel broke.  Me nor my buddy I was with, and the guy at the Tackle Store where I bought my new reel, have seen anything like this before. Got a Abu Garcia OrraSX30.

I ended up grabbing my 30# braided line and pulling the fish in... caveman style

 

Anyone ever have this happen?

 

I think that I must have damaged it somehow and that's how it broke when I was fighting the fish.

I have had my line tangled up like that but never broke a reel.  Looks like a bit of rash on that reel, could be those pavers you're dropping it on, grass won't scratch it up in that manner.

Yup have had the reel foot brake off of spinning reels using, no stretch lines, heavy drag setups, and stiff rod tips......

My fix was going back to mono, on proper action rods, with proper drag setups...

Do you remember dropping the reel? It may have cracked and with all those big fish you have been catching and missing. The battles could have made the crack worse until it finally gave way.

Someone here had a similar thing happen to their Revo Premier spinning reel but they said they never damaged it. Maybe the foot was knicked. Your president looks worked and seems to have more scratches than a DJ Competition    Email pure fishing, they may take care of it even out of warranty. Unlike you, I have nothing to brag about in the bragging rights thread.

Braid on a spinning reel?

 

Could be that the braid developed a lot of energy that was transmitted back into the reel, unlike mono and fluorocarbon lines that have some give to them.

 

I have never had a spinning reel break other than the time on Smith Mountain Lake in rough water I bounced and landed on top of one of my spinning reels, bending the bail.

 

But I do not use braid on any reel other than a baitcaster that is engineered to accept braid's unflexing power.

 

Any one out there use braid on a spinning reel other than for salt water applications???

Yes, all my spinning reels have braid as well as almost everyone I know that fishes in So Fla. Both fresh and salt although some of the salt guys will use mono on occasion (in salt water).

Sure - I have braid on several freshwater spinning reels - it's not my favorite line - but it has it's place. One reel, a Pflueger Supreme 8025 (near-ultralight size) has had mostly 20lb braid on it since new; as of today - 2,109 fish caught with that reel with no damage so far..................but then I adjust the drag to have a little give on the hookset.....

 

Edit - there has been some damage - the spool clicker is broken on the primary spool...

i've had graphite frame spinning reels snap the neck like that.that is why i do not tell anybody to buy a pflueger president or any other composite/graphite/zion or any other non magnesium or aluminum framed reel no matter who makes it.

I use braid on all my gear, no issues like this. I always use a leader, which will add some shock absorption to the equation.

Yea there is a lot of wear and tear on that reel. That's y I think it may have been cracked from me droppin it somewhere and that's how it broke.

They are replacing it for me anyway which is cool

A bit of levity................but unlikely setting it down on grass will mark it up like that.

I had a very old Daiwa baitcaster break on a hookset once. I've ripped the guts out of two Pfluegar Supreme XT's on the hooket on smallmouth with shakyheads. Just set the hook and heard a terrible grinding noise and then couldn't reel without the reel slipping badly. I'm sure it was something I'd done wrong but it happened twice with two brand new reels in less than a week. Went to the Supreme MGX after that and haven't had a problem since.

My Dad had a bass about 4 to 5 pounds tear up the drag on his reel.  Of course the reel was an old Shakespeare reel that was probably 15 to 20 years old at the time.

Never had a fish break a reel like that to me, but in June my Abu Garcia 302i spinning reel (cheapo) drag was broken by my PB largemouth (5lber).  Ever since that fight the drag doesn't tighten well at all.  Replaced it with a Stradic 2500 FJ instead of fixing it.

Very good point fortunately my friend I was with shares your sentiment so I avoided those reels

Yep for bass you should see the size of these fish in these ponds at the restricted golf community. Some of them have heavy mats and pads so you need something strong to get them out I they snap your line every time!

I have lost numerous fish, lures, hooks to mono. I have yet to lose a fish, a lure, a hook on my braid. Even when it seems like I am stuck and dead to rights I manage to get it out.. Mind you I have only been fishing with braided line for a few days now lol

i was pond fishing with a small spinnerbait on a zebco 33 one day several years ago. i hooked a bass about 1lb if that and it stripped the main gear inside the reel when it hit real hard, i landed the fish but the reel was replaced. i had caught much bigger fish on this reel, and even tangled with a monster flathead on it...
