Waterloo9 Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 So basically, i got my spinning rod and reel and now i got my line. I went to put it on today and never put line one before. I got a 200yard spool of seagur abrazx and about half way through i got a huge knot in it while doing it. I had a little loop on the reel and went to get it out and needless to say it didn't end well. My question is, is this going to do anything? Is it going to give me problems now? What about when i get to it? Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted July 19, 2013 Super User Posted July 19, 2013 Fluorocarbon breaks really easily when it's been kinked. I wouldn't think it would cause you any problems until you get to it though. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 19, 2013 Super User Posted July 19, 2013 You bought the wrong line for starters. InvizX is much better suited for spinning tackle. Another alternative is to use the AbrazX as a leader. Your mainline can be anything you like, but I'm using Tuf-Line or Kanzen on two of mine. Quote
Arv Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 I REALLY like braided line on my spinning reels now. I feel like its much more manageable and I haven't gotten any knots since I switched. Just tie the fc leader on the end. That should keep you from running into problems like you just experienced. Quote

I was recommended this because where i have been fishing has all had a lot of vegetation. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 19, 2013 Super User Posted July 19, 2013 I'm just saying AbrazX is too stiff for mainline on spinning tackle. Let's look at the leader idea a little closer. The main issue is the connecting knot. You need to practice tying the Alberto Knot over and over again. With a little practice you will achieve 100% confidence in this knot. I begin with a loop in the mainline (braid) and wrap the fluorocarbon. This allows a very close cut on the front of the knot which nearly eliminates problems with the cast. The braided tag on the back of the knot is finished by burning the end with a lighter which creates a small bubble. Hold the knot in the tips of your fingers and move the edge of the flame to the tag. Again, this takes a little practice. Quote
Waterloo9 Posted July 19, 2013 Author Posted July 19, 2013 Well i got a whole new problem now. I shoulda just stuck with my ugly stck and shakespeare reel. I had a small X of line that wasn't on the spool it was on the reel. I got it out easy but when i was putting the pole back together and getting it all set up. The bail flipped and this reel, reels so easy it started goin without me even touching it and my line is all messed up i got line coming out the bottom of the reel. So, is this fixable? Should i just start cuttin line get it all out and keep what flouro i can for leaders and buy braided? Really frustrated with this. Quote
BobP Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 If your fluoro tangled while reeling it onto the reel, that suggests to me that you wound it on in the wrong direction and you can expect disaster pretty quickly when using it on the water. You want to lay the spool of line on the floor so that it comes off the spool in a counter-clockwise direction. I would put an empty spool on an electric drill. Have someone hold the reel or lock it in a vice and use the drill to take all the line back off the spool. Then respool the line onto the reel as above and stop about 1/8" below the lip of the spool. Soak the spool in some hot water for awhile and any twists will conform to the spool versus trying to jump off the spool. Fluoro that has been kinked is weakened and is prone to break much easier. I always cut the line at the kink, wherever it is. And yes, the most controllable setup with a spinning reel is to use braided line since when it gets twists, it will not jump off the spool like mono or fluoro. If you decide to go with braid, do not forget to put a little mono or fluoro on the spool first to anchor the line, then tie it to the braid and spool it on. Braid has no stretch at all so will not grip a spool like other lines and it will slip on the spool unless you have some backing on there. Using braid is by far the most trouble-free way to go on a spinning rod. But most of us would also use a fluoro leader with the braid, especially in clear water, and the Alberto knot is the best, smallest diameter fluoro to braid knot to use. Quote
jtesch Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Most Floro's have more line memory than other types of line. meaning they tend to act like a spring. This makes floro line sort of tough to use on a spinning reel especially the floro's that are a little stiffer like abrazx. And I have found the smaller the spinning reel, the worse the problem. Braid with a floro leader is the way to go and use the Alberto knot or use a co-poly. I like P-line CX premium Quote
Super User deep Posted July 20, 2013 Super User Posted July 20, 2013 That sucks Waterloo. You need to ensure that the way the line comes out of the filler spool is the way it goes into the reel. You can use a heavy book to put the line on with some tension. What lb test are you trying to spool on? Quote
