Muzzy8124 Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 I am relatively new to bass fishing and my friend told me to texas rig craws. What kind of hook do i use. I have seen it done with straight shank hooks but i dont know what size or any specifics. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted July 18, 2013 Super User Posted July 18, 2013 Depends on the size craw. I use a 4/0 EWG for Rage Craws and 3/0 for Baby Rage Craws. As for weight I usually start at 3/16 - 1/4 oz. 2 Quote
Mccallister25 Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Felix pretty much summed it up. I almost always use Gamakatsu EWG hooks. Anywhere from a 2/0 to 4/0. Pick up a pack of Rage craws like he said and go with a 4/0 EWG. Quote
Derek Garner Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 the texas rig is my go to tackle, i fish it shallow at almost any kind of structure, shallow fish are usually active, which is what makes this such a reliable method, although im not a fan of craws unless im fishing rip rap, i would recommend using lighter weight, i use as low as 1/32 oz. and no higher than 1/2 oz. unless im punch rigging, if your using a lighter weight try spinning gear, if you dont know how look up how to flip with a spinning outfit. they're starting to make flipping hooks which i have really started to like and use alot, especally for larger baits like craws and creatures, as far as hook size, everyone has explained that well. HOPE ALL OF THIS HELPS Quote
paul25 Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 strike king rage craws are prdominately the only baits i use for texas rigs. i use a owener twist lock hook 4/0 for standard rage craw and 3/0 for the baby craw. and a 1/4 or 3/16 weight depending on the depth. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted July 18, 2013 Super User Posted July 18, 2013 When I run a craw only, I use a 4/0 Moaner Stroker hook. It lets the craw fall horizontally rather than vertically like with a Texas rig. For me, I have much better luck with horizontal fall than vertical. 1 Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted July 19, 2013 Super User Posted July 19, 2013 Same as everyone else. 3/16 or 1/4 tungsten weight and a 4/0 wide gap hook. I use the mustad kvd grip pin hooks. I noticed with Gamagatsu after a few fish the bait would slide down and bunch up on the hook. These eliminate this from happening. More fish out of 1 craw bait. Quote
Muzzy8124 Posted July 19, 2013 Author Posted July 19, 2013 What about straight shank hooks. also the craws that i use are Bass Assassin Pure Craws 4". Would this be ok to fish from shore in a WEED FILLED pond. Quote

Would this be ok to fish from shore in a WEED FILLED pond.Ewg hooks allow room for the bait to collapse and get a good hook set. Straight shank won't. I fish then from shore all the time. It's my favorite bait to pitch around cover. 1 Quote
JCiurej34 Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 I like to use a 4/0 EWG with a 3/16 oz weight with either a Rage Craw or Berkley Powerbait Chigger Craw. A texas rig with one of those baits is something I almost always have tied on. Quote
NEjitterbugger Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 Rage craws, usually throw 2/0 hooks with a 1/16 or 3/16 bullet weight.... Works for me Quote
Bassfink86 Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 rage craws on a 3/0 lazer trocar work hook w/ a 3/16 - 1/4 oz tungsten sinker, also just started using VMC 4/0 flippin hooks as well with the same weights Quote
Super User eyedabassman Posted July 19, 2013 Super User Posted July 19, 2013 Like everyone said but, I fish alot of the Netbait Tiny Paca craw, the Baby paca and the Paca craws. But one great way to fish besides the T-rig is fish them on a weigthed hook and I lke the Mustad weighted hook because you can adjust the weight on the shank of the hook to give the craw a different fall. Many times the weighted hook CRAW bait will out fish it on a T-rig! Quote
Arv Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 I like a rage craw on a 4/0 EWG hook w/ a 1/4 or 3/16 oz sinker. Quote
Loop_Dad Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 I do different things and change my mind all the time. I was for straight shank with snell knot fun. But for the time being, I use lot of owner sled heads. When I first tried, I didn't like it because I am stuck with their choice of hook, but I started to liking the convenience of it and also the shape of the head. Also the bait is really locked in with the screw. I picked up something similar from gamakatsu (no screw), didn't like it at all. http://www.monstertackle.com/fishinglures/owner-sled-head.html Quote
Revival Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 How are you guys fishing your t-rigged craws? Just drag it on the bottom? Twitch at all? I have a bunch of craws and dying to catch one on them. 1 Quote
