The article cited physiological damage, not psychological damage, but just in case I always talk a fish through the unhooking and photographing, e.g., "Hey, buddy! Whadja get there? A fluke? Was it good? Yeah? Hey, great job hammerin' that thing, buddy, seriously. Well done.  Later, tater!" If they are as fair-minded as I am, they're telling their shrink, "Yeah, the whole thing kind of sucked but the guy was cool about it and this hole in my face has been a great ice-breaker at parties..."

I don't know all the facts, and I don't know that I believe anyone who claims to know all the facts, but my gut says that an animal that can eat a live crawdad does not experience pain in anywhere near the same way that I do.

This thread is great, I like to wear my PETA shirt while fishing , hunting and grocery shopping. The definition under the heading is .. People Eating Tasty Animals!!

never by PETA, but one place I go there is always 2 old guys walking a dog and telling me about God, I am a Christian so I sometimes talk back, BUT they always lead with the same phrase.. "when I was young out here laying out on the lake sinning without the Lord"  when did fishing become a sin, I have never once "layed" on the lake ??

here is the other way around. Im the crazy out of this world environmentalist that has spent a ton of money on equipment just to release the fish. I hate fishing around people. I avoid them, it sucks when they are in one of the best spots of the lake spooking the bass.

I'm not that hot headed but my older brother was really bad. He could press with one arm from the floor 175lbs. To the ceiling. Thank God we never ran into the People Eating Tastey Animals  I do not know

what he would of done. He was like a human pit bull but the nicest guy you'd ever meet just don't make him mad. He was my mentor in taking me fishing and hunting. He also taught me about sportsmanship ethics too, we don't shoot game birds on the ground they have to be in the air that's a fair game. If we miss they live. He passed away and now I'm left with my son's. It's almost there turn now to carry the family torch in outdoor sports.

It's not the other way around. Most fishermen and hunters do more for the environment than members of any environmentalist group.

We are being assaulted everyday by regulations. In California the DFG department of fish and game has been changed to DFW department of fish and wildlife, the word game indicated the aminal could be killed.

The radical environmentalist win arguments by putting their money where it counts; by electing government representaitives and regulatory appointees into controlling what sportsmen and women can do or can't do as they see fit. We have lost a lot outdoor public areas to closed areas for hunting or fishing.

PETA is simply one of several groups that have pooled their resources to achieve their goals without confronting recreational individuals or groups.....and they are winning!

Not just fishing gear, d**n near everything has the prop 65 warning. You should see the cars with the 6" sticker on the drivers window.

I quote the bible where God sais we have domain over all the animals on earth. If they believe in God they cant say much more for its Gods word and command. If they are evolutionist then there argument is mute because survival of the fittest right or only the strong survive which is the core belief of evolution. that puts humans on the top of the food chain in that belief.

I pick up garbage on the shore, extra fishing line that's on the shore. Garbage left in the woods and abandoned pets too.

I suggest catch & release when they can get help with food stamps if they apply for them.

I see people taking 2" sunfish to eat.

Have never seen one while fishing, hopefully I won't ever. I have seen Peta-type protesters at the local KFC, although in rural VA they are (so far) pretty meek and mostly polite. I have joked about buying them a bucket of chicken, but my wife said it would be a waste of money.

In South Georgia ... not likely!  The stereotypical "redneck" has a pickup, lots of guns and very little patience for animal rights nuts.

Equal treatment of animals.  Okay....deep fry everything.

I disagree. There is a place and a time for smoked or grilled as well.

I caught a 3.5lb bass and this lady was screaming you're going to kill it, its out of the water. At the same time I was about to release it, a guy drives by yelling, nooooooooooo dont put it back yet, I want to see the fish. It was hilarious, she got mad and slammed her sliding door shut.

The guy then showed me some huge bass he caught on bluegills and bream. 7 and 10lbs in weight as well as a huge snook.

Let's keep the bible out of this, as long as the post wasn't deleted I'll just say this.  The Old Testament prohibits the unnecessary suffering to animals and animals can be used for legitimate needs like food and clothing, animals must be slaughtered in a humane way.  These are very old laws, but they are in the bible.  I do apologize for the TOS violation, but it's quite clear in the O.T.

I straddle the issue, on one hand I'm a fisherman and do my best to handle fish I release in a proper manner.  I don't believe every fisherman does the the same, most on fishing forums are much more aware than others.  Some of things I'm with PETA is how animals are treated, like dog fighting and acts of cruelty.  One thing that really bothers me is trapping using those leg traps, it isn't a quick kill but a slow death.
If clipping a fin or bleeding a blue runner to catch a shark is cruel, I'm doing it anyway.

Tom, you are exactly right. This is just another reason that sportfishing will be gone in 20 or 30 more years (except maybe on private lands) even IF we (humans) haven't wiped ourselves out yet.

"Survival of the fittest" refers to an organisms ability to procreate and pass its genes into the next generation. It has nothing to do with who is physically stronger, or who is on top of the food chain.  "Fitness," in an evolutionary sense, refers to an organisms reproduction rate. If environmental pressures allow an organism with a unique genetic trait to reproduce more often/successfully/etc. than other members of its species, then this organism is considered to be more "fit." And because this trait gives the organism greater reproductive ability, the trait will be passed on to future generations more frequently and will become more widspread throughout the population. So what I'm trying to say is that a fish (or a bird, or a tree or an ameoba) can be just as "fit" as a human,

Sorry, I had to be that guy. :eyebrows:

Oh, and PETA sucks!
