aquaholic Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 an animal rights activist? Today i was reading the peta site for some laughs and i ran across this. http://www.banned site/about/why-peta/catch-and-release-fishing.aspx I know hunters encounter it,but i wondered if you've ever been approached while fishing. I personally never have. But here in the midwest i dont think we have as many vegans/ animal rights activists, although i probably could eat fresh corn every meal.
Super User Felix77 Posted July 18, 2013 Super User Posted July 18, 2013 No but I had a woman call me a murderer. I happened to catch and release a smallmouth not to far from her.
RoachDad Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 No but I had a woman call me a murderer. I happened to catch and release a smallmouth not to far from her. Yeah, but are you a murderer? That is the real question.
Super User Felix77 Posted July 18, 2013 Super User Posted July 18, 2013 Yeah, but are you a murderer? That is the real question. Only if they are Carolina Panther fans.

Wow, I did not see much to laugh about there.
aquaholic Posted July 18, 2013 Author Posted July 18, 2013 Only if they are Carolina Panther fans. You cant hate on panthers fans too much, they have jimmy clausen on their team. Isnt that punishment enough? How did you handle it when you were called a murderer?
Super User Felix77 Posted July 18, 2013 Super User Posted July 18, 2013 You cant hate on panthers fans too much, they have jimmy clausen on their team. Isnt that punishment enough? How did you handle it when you were called a murderer? LOL ... Panthers kill ME because on paper they should be more competitive. Let's see what the next season has to bring. I just hope Cam stops crying! As for the murderer comment ... I essentially ignored it and moved away from the spot. I didn't want to get into a confrontation or debate about fishing with someone hanging out on her deck. I just wanted to fish.
Super User senile1 Posted July 18, 2013 Super User Posted July 18, 2013 I have never been approached while fishing or hunting by an animal rights activist. On one hand, we can all laugh at some of the extreme views and actions of some PETA members. On the other hand, there is always something to be learned from everyone, even the most unlikely of sources. We should avoid leaving fishing line in our waters and on our shores. We should handle fish with as much care as possible to avoid removing their protective coat. We should try to avoid hooking fish in the gullet. We should limit the amount of time the fish is out of the water. We should respect the resource and many anglers do. Should we stop fishing just because these things happen from time to time? No. It is an imperfect world and sometimes fish will be injured. I don't stop driving just because people are injured in wrecks. If I were approached I would try to find common ground with these responses. 6
GeorgiaBassBros Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Never been confronted by any vegan tree huggin hippies, but to be honest i dont think theres too many down here in georgia
Super User MarkH024 Posted July 18, 2013 Super User Posted July 18, 2013 Only if they are Carolina Panther fans. Wasn't aware they still existed.
Koofy Smacker Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Never while fishing although too many times to count I have had people driving down the road flip me the bird while walking into the woods to archery hunt and also in gun season. Several times they scream obsenities also but they never stop. If anything they yell it while they speed up

Super User flyfisher Posted July 18, 2013 Super User Posted July 18, 2013 Never have but I didn't see anything in that article that isn't true and probably all things we have witnessed or done. We can only do the best we can to keep fish healthy and teach others the same practices if they are unaware.
Super User slonezp Posted July 18, 2013 Super User Posted July 18, 2013 Wait til you have to explain to an adult walking with their children why you are killing gobies and either feeding the gulls or throwing them in the trash. Most of the kids want to help feed the gulls. The adults, not so much.
Curved Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 These are the same folks that "rescue" cats so they can kill them in an effort to help bird populations. As most sportsman are also conservationists, fishermen are more often than not the people actually making the difference in improving the well-being of fish.

RoachDad Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 LOL ... Panthers are killing YOU!! Dude, you are a Yankee! The cats are killing us. Every stinking year we look good on paper. Not counting the year after Peppers left. I always think we are going to the conference title, but they always let me down. I avoid confrontation. Just leave them alone. I've tried to discuss this kind of thing and you are just wasting your breath. Minds are made up and you cannot change them. But it has never happened while I was fishing.
Super User MCS Posted July 18, 2013 Super User Posted July 18, 2013 That is the dumbest thing I have read. When it said they suffer "physoclogical damage" I knew it was just gonna go down hill from there. As far as feeling pain, I am not 100% sure they know what they are talking about. Bass are cold blooded just like many reptiles, which lose their tails as defense. I think they have feeling but in no way can it be the same as a warm blooded animal much less a human. They just try to give everything human qualities as means of justification and persuation. I also like that they insinuate fishermen leave trash all over the place. Typical AR nut jobs. I seen it too many times, especially with the dogs, they will take a perfectly healthy working animal and add 20 pounds and stick it in a 5x5 kennel only to kill it in a month because the owner had it on a chain, didn't feed it enough, had scars from catching a few pigs. Maybe if they loved human beings as much as they loved animals this world wouldn't be such a cold, hateful and backwards place. I agree there is nothing you can say, just walk away because insanity has no reasoning.

Trust me i have gone down that road before with deer hunting and i never will again. I am just interested how fisherman/woman are perceived through out the country. To be honest i never gave it any thought before until i read that article. Around here the only thing people ever say to me is to ask me if i caught anything or to tell me spots they have had luck with .

I had my years with the Giants where it was just a joke to watch! I can't complain though. Even with the ups and downs the team always seems to squeeze out a championship every 5 years or so. I have friends who have never seen their team in the SuperBowl let alone win one.
Super User buzzed bait Posted July 18, 2013 Super User Posted July 18, 2013 PERF (people for the ethical reporting of fact) "Studies show that fish who are caught and then returned to the water suffer such severe physiological stress that they often die of shock" Often? how about sometimes or even rarely? see how one subtle word change makes a world of difference? "In commercial fishing, fish's swim bladders can rupture because of the sudden change in pressure." Thanks for the intermixing of types of fishing, is this about the dangers of harvesting AKA commercial fishing or catch and release? "Every year, anglers leave behind a trail of tackle victims that includes millions of birds, turtles, and other animals who suffer debilitating injuries after they swallow fishhooks or become entangled in fishing line. Wildlife rehabilitators say that discarded fishing tackle is one of the greatest threats to aquatic animals. Fishing is far from a harmless pastime. Please encourage anglers to ditch their poles and try alternative activities, such as hiking, camping, and canoeing." While I won't disagree about the need to clean up after ourselves I have to laugh at the suggested activities over fishing. I love to camp myself, but how many times have you seen someone leave a campsite a MISERABLE disaster? Often times some of these same environmental activist types..... I'm pretty sure our human developments i.e. pollution, erosion, etc are far more harmful I just wish we were in more of a partnership with groups like this to work toward conservation rather than the bi-polar one side or the other.... left or right, blue or red, whatever...... 1

Apologies for getting off topic. Yeah, we had our chance against the Patriots and missed 2 easy field goals. One would have won the game. Then we missed another in OT. We were so happy to get Cam, but old #1 better show some stones and hide some of the dancing and get some work done this year. People are sick of hearing about how good he is and then listening to his whining.
Super User senile1 Posted July 18, 2013 Super User Posted July 18, 2013 You're dreaming my friend, but good luck trying. I'm not dreaming at all. If I were approached by 100 PETA members and my comments only got through to one person it would be worth it. We win the battle by changing hearts and minds. It's much easier to get someone to understand your point of view if you can find a reason to respect them. I think we can find something to respect in most people we disagree with, except for those psychopaths and sociopaths we occasionally encounter. 1
