SwampLife Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Does any one have problems throwing a 1/8 bait with a medium heavy rod with bait caster reel.. Example like a 1/8 bullet weight and a baby brush hog? Quote
Kevin22 Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Well, it depends on the weight of the bait itself. I have thrown 10" worms with a 1/8 bullet on a MHF rod. I fish baby brushes on a 7' MF Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted July 18, 2013 Super User Posted July 18, 2013 A Baby Brush Hog weighs a considerable amount. You shouldn't have any trouble throwing one with a ⅛oz bullet weight. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted July 18, 2013 Super User Posted July 18, 2013 What is your rod measured for? I have a MH which is measured for at least 3/8th. When I throw anything less than that in total weight it won't cast well for me. Probably because there is not enough "whip" in the rod to project it out. I'm with some of the others. A baby brush hog and 1/8 oz weight should be good. If it's not working for you upgrade it to a 3/16 and see if it makes a difference. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 18, 2013 Super User Posted July 18, 2013 SwampLife, if the rod is rated for 1/4 up, then it should do fine....1/8 weight plus Brush Hog should make the lower weight limit. Felix, it seems to me that a lot of the time a MH rod rated for 3/8 up often has an Extra Fast action. Light lures won't load worth a darn on this kind of action. At least they don't seem to for me. YMMV. It is why the vast majority of my rods have Fast actions. 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Keep in mind that the ratings on rods are all subjective. The sweet spot usually lies somewhere near the middle of the advertised range. Your bait might be too light for that particular rod yet be fine on another MH. Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted July 18, 2013 Super User Posted July 18, 2013 No issues at all throwing baits like that with me 3 power/MH Dobyns rods. But if I were to try with my Daiwa Zillion 7' MH, I think it would be a challenge. My point is to echo DVT's point above Quote
SwampLife Posted July 18, 2013 Author Posted July 18, 2013 the *** black mh fast is rated for 3/8 to 1 oz.. Thanks guys Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted July 19, 2013 Super User Posted July 19, 2013 Not all mh rods are the same. I have some where the parameters are 1/4 oz - 2 oz, or 3/8- 1 oz. and other variations. Optimal casting is the sweet spot, but there isn't a rod I own where I haven't used lures less or more than the indicated parameters. I have never incurred a problem with either scenario. Just yesterday I'm throwing a 3 oz lure on a rod rated for 2 oz, not a bit a problem, not the most comfortable but it got the job done. Conversely I've used if not 100's of times many dozens with very light lures, equally effective for what I was doing. The only thing I'm concerned about is putting the lure of my choice where it NEEDS to be, lures as far as weight goes will be all over the map using the same rod. I use nothing but general purpose spinning rods for every technique, lure weight and species. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 19, 2013 Super User Posted July 19, 2013 Well, SirSnookalot, you are primarily a spinning guy. IMO it is much harder to throw lighter lures on a b/c than on spinning. Of course, I don't have the skill with a b/c that the vast majority on here have so others mileage may vary. I tried a 1/16 oz. lure on a Villain ML spinning rod rated 1/8-1/2. Distance was abysmal. This rod doesn't want to load worth a darn with that weight. However, I never had to worry about a backlash no matter how hard I threw. SwampLife, as stated, not all rods will perform equally even tho they have the same ratings. I was out the other day testing a 2 oz. weight on a 7'6" Villain MH b/c rod rated for 3/8-1-1/4 oz. I was able to cast a fair distance, but not as far as possible had I been using a lighter lure. The rod handled it, but I didn't feel comfortable using that heavy of a weight as it felt like it was overloading the rod a bit too much. This rod would cast a 1/2 oz. spinnerbait fishing distances, but I was not very happy with the results compared to my other MH rods. Don't think I will even bother trying a 3/8 oz. lure on this particular rod. They only way to know what your rod will handle is to use it with the weights you plan on fishing with. Quote
SwampLife Posted July 19, 2013 Author Posted July 19, 2013 I here you, I don't have any trouble with distance... But with something that light I am way more accurate with a medium.....until I tried it on one of my other medium heavy rods and loved it...but on another medium heavy rod im back to being less accurate.. so basically my question is about a *** medium heavy, I do no not own a *** medium heavy and was thinking about purchasing one. Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 19, 2013 Super User Posted July 19, 2013 Can't help you there. I would have to count, but am guessing I have in the neighborhood of 10-14 MH rods, but none are an ***. My *** Black is a Medium power. Quote

Another variable to accuracy is rod length, are both these rods the same length, or is the one that is more accurate a shorter rod??? Quote
Hattrick7 Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 I have a 7' mh AG Veritas rod with a Revo 3 SX reel and I cast wacky senkos no problem. Maybe your spool tension is too tight? Quote
