aquaholic Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 I have an ultra light 5'6" laying around so i ordered a reel for it off ebay. Its a pflueger gx7 4730 gx 195/4 115/6 and 100/8. It feels a little big. I thought about saving it for another rod but i already have 3 spinning setups and i really dont need another. Obviously it will work but my question is it too much reel for the rod? Or will it be a good setup? Quote
MichiganFishing1997 Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 I believe thats one size up from what i have. I also have a trion. I think you should be just fine, but if it bothers you, and you would be more comfortable with something else, then do that. Quote
Kevin22 Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 imo, it is too big. But it is up to you. I like size 20 pfluegers on my UL rods. I use 30's on my walleye rods. Quote
The Rooster Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 I have a 30 on a 6' medium rod. Works well there with 8 pound line. I can see it working also on a 5'6" rod but not real well for ultralight. The reason is the line capacity. On an ultralight I'd use 6 pound or less. The 30 size holds a large amount of that, the smaller in line size you go, the more it holds. I'd see it digging in and causing various other line management issues also. For an ultralight I'd probably have gotten the 25 size. Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted July 18, 2013 Super User Posted July 18, 2013 that's what she said. Beat me to it Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted July 18, 2013 Super User Posted July 18, 2013 no it's not to big.pros use bigger spinning reels because bigger spools manage line better. Quote
aquaholic Posted July 18, 2013 Author Posted July 18, 2013 that's what she said. If shes asking if its too big, you might have an issue. Unless your into things like that. I was really wanting to run 4lb test and actually have to fight the fish instead of horsing it in. But i dont want to fill it it 195 yards . That just seems insane. Quote

I use it to partial fill spools so I don't have to spend so much of my hard earned cash on Braid of Fluorocarbon. Quote
aquaholic Posted July 18, 2013 Author Posted July 18, 2013 I just ordered a 20 size so i guess ill throw this one up for sale on here if anyone wants it. Quote
Kevin22 Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 You will love the trion 20's. I have 6. I use them on ice rods and UL rods. Superb drag, very light, casts a mile, and are very smooth. On my open water UL rods I have power pro 4lb braid. I really like it! It is so sensitive you wouldnt believe it, I can feel a fish fart next to my jig. I swear it is the diameter of a human hair. RoachDad Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 that's what she said. yeah, pretty sure there is no such thing as too big! Quote

You dont have any issues running braid that small? what kind of braid are you using? Quote
Kevin22 Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 None at all. I fish from 1/16 down to about 1/80 with it. It is power pro spectra. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted July 19, 2013 Super User Posted July 19, 2013 I think the 20 is a way better choice for that rod, the 25 would have been good too. The 30 size which would have been usable may not balance near as well and not be as comfortable to fish with. Not being a professional tournament fisherman myself, common sense would sway me away from using a ul rod and 30 size reel with 4Lb line to horse bass in. Ul's are great for fun fishing, gills, small bass, trout and the like, but to use it to make money in a big time tournament does not sound feasible to me. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted July 19, 2013 Super User Posted July 19, 2013 I voted yes, but that's just me. Try it out for a while and see how you like it. Quote
aquaholic Posted July 19, 2013 Author Posted July 19, 2013 I voted yes, but that's just me. Try it out for a while and see how you like it. It didnt feel balanced when i put it on the pole which was bothering me a lot. Its up for sale in the flew market now. Quote

My local fish store didnt have any power pro in 4lb only 5 but i didnt need a 300 yard spool of it. I ended up with 8, a little overkill. not sure if i should run a leader or not but im excited to try this setup out. Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 cant remember for sure, but i believe i have the 25 on a 5'6 light rod and i love the combo. its a great little reel and has handled some decent fish, i got it spooled with 6lb sufix siege... Quote
