Yea those catfish will have you thinking you have a Huge Bass!

My GF managed to catch a 5lber on a Senko 2 weekends ago.   Didnt think a Catfish would go after that type of bait, but it sure did!

Good stuff.  I think I'm going to try my neighborhood pond today.  It's got plenty of sunfish in it... no idea if it holds bass.  Guess I'll find out tonight.

If it holds sunfish I would say good possibility of bass being in there, you just gotta throw some lures to find out. I am usually unsure if the ponds I fish have any fish at all because most of them were made for run off and drainage for all the new developments but you would be surprised at the amount of healthy bass that thrive in them.  Might be a little tough out there today with the cold front and string of storms pushing through, I was out yesterday for the afternoon and only managed one bass (21 in 5lb) really had to work for him.

Either they are legally stocked or illegally released.  Some say they can be brought in by birds.  My pond is connected to another small lake and then the res by a stream, so I suppose they could have made it in that way.  :)

How do bass, or any other fish for that matter, end up in man made ponds like run offs and on gold courses?

Ive often wondered the same thing, they've got to have been put there by someone, several of them in fact if they are to repopulate.

Quan jig the bass was measured at 21 inches I dont have a scale so the weight was guestimated by the length and by the weight of holding it I tried to make the best guess at the weight I could seemed to me to be around 5. Also homemadebaits its a little tough to take a decent picture by yourself I tried to do the best I could with it plus they had to be cut down to be posted to the form.....so next time ill make sure I have my camera crew out there with me to get a really nice picture so that way 5lbs will be more believable even though that's uncommon at all for a fish with that length.

Pictures can be deceiving, this is a fish I caught just the other day that wasn't even 4lbs. I don't even try to put weights on fish if I don't have a scale, tends to bring a little grief on oneself from those that do weigh their catches!!

Don't get me wrong, that's a great fish! Shimmy might have a little problem calling it a 5 tho!!

Both of the fish in our right hands are over 5lbs

they're always bigger when they break the line or throw the bait, or when you don't have a scale handy.   weights only important in tourny's   still a nice bass none the less!

Sorry PA kid wasn't trying to be mean... Guessing fish weights is a hard thing to do.

Well I was tired and the skies didn't look too inviting, so I didn't try the pond yesterday.  Soon... soon...

Can't believe I haven't seen this thread earlier. I was surprised Huntsman was open already. I thought they just drained it and took out a ton of bass. Anyhoo, looking for someone to buddy around with and do some pond hopping on the weekends. I like to hit it early and then again in the evenings. If anyone is interested just pm me. Tight lines!

I have a question for those of you who fish the potomac and tributaries. If I get the little Tohatsu tuned well enough I'm planning to hit either Pohick bay or Occoquan river on Sunday. I want to target Snakehead. I know you guys normally catch them accidentally while fishing for bass. Where can I expect to find a good population of them? What techniques do they like? They like slow topwater right?

They like slow or fast top water early. Then a chatterbait in water shallow water 2 feet or less or rattle trap in water 3 feet or deeper. Look for water a little more protected from tides and vegetation on land that extends into water at least 6" deep. Smaller creeks that feed into pohick are also ideal..

As it turns out, my private/HOA pond does hold bass.  I managed to catch one in about 45 minutes on a 5" wacky rigged senko.  I am upset I didn't bring my scale with me, but I'm certain it was a new PB.  A conservative estimate is maybe 4lbs?  Not sure.  Really wish I brought my scale!  My previous best was right at 3lb.

Also should add this was with my Daiwa Lexa 100 spooled with Yo-Zuri Hybrid #6 on a 7' M/F Veritas.  Hook was a 1/0 Gamakatsu finesse weedless.

I've had best luck on high tide.  I only throw a frog.  50# braid on a heavy rod.  If I had to choose, I would launch out of Pohick.  Work the creeks or where ever you see grass or pads.  In low tide they can be difficult to find away from banks.

High tide going out is by far the best time to target them. It pushes them up in the vegetation that at other tides is not accessible.
