Hollisray Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 looking to up grade my old spinner bait rod and real. any good suggestions on an all around combo thanks. Quote
loodkop Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 6.6 to 7 MH/F rod and 6:1 baitcasting reel. You don't mention a budget so I will tell you what I use. Rod Powell Max 6.8 MH/XF , reel Chronarch 100BSV, Line PP or 832 40# for "grass" lakes or 15 17# Big Game mono. Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 I love a 6'9" mh/f rod for spinnerbaits. With eithe a 6:1 or 7:1 ratio reel Currently using a 6'9" veritas w/ PQ reel and 6'9" vendetta w/ PQ. Quote
skeletor6 Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 What weight spinnerbaits will you be throwing. 1/4oz-3/8oz is a whole different ballgame than 1/2oz-1oz. I would move up to a heavy rod in the upper range. Fast action seems to work well. Also, if I was throwing the heavier weight range I would opt for a 6.X:1 ratio. Quote
MDBowHunter Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 I use a St Croix Mojo Bass 7' MH/F spinner bait rod and a Daiwa Lexa 100, I also use this same rod for frogs and it seem to do great. Quote
buzzfrog Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 Small spinnerbaits use to be daiwa sellus with old carbon lite, MHXF now I use a 1 in a mill non breaking carrot stick Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 17, 2013 Super User Posted July 17, 2013 I like spinnerbaits. To be perfectly honest, I will throw them on any rod except for my crankbait rods. Last year I used my Curado 51E/Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth 6'10" MF rod a lot so the 3/16 oz. spinnerbaits got thrown on this combo. I almost always carry my Fuego/Cumara 7'2" MHF Senko/Fat Ika rod with me. It gets used a lot with 1/2 oz. spinnerbaits. I feel a Fast action rod is the most versatile and the majority of my rods have this action. Therefore a spinnerbait gets used on most of my rods. Quote
Kevin22 Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 Anything 7' MH F will work perfect for spinnerbaits. I actually use the mojo spinnerbait rod unless I am throwing 1/4oz single willow in which case I use a 7' M F. Quote

jj'sbassinforfun Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Fast action is the common choice for SB's. ExFast could be a positive in some cases(hookset and feel), But I've never tried one myself. Quote
skeletor6 Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 A true XF action is unnecessary. And stiffness in the tip doesn't add extra feel in my experience. 1 Quote
Hollisray Posted July 20, 2013 Author Posted July 20, 2013 THE ROD I AM ASKING ABOUT IS A G LOOMIS GL2 812C SBR. Quote
Super User MCS Posted July 20, 2013 Super User Posted July 20, 2013 A true XF action is unnecessary. And stiffness in the tip doesn't add extra feel in my experience. Looking at powell diesel, loomis and shimano all their designated spinner bait rods are xf....st criox are fast...and take falcon for another example theirs are mod or mod fast. Is one really better than the other for a reason or is it just preference? Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted July 20, 2013 Global Moderator Posted July 20, 2013 I just got a 7'2" Phenix M1 MH/F casting rod for spinners and I can't put it down. Mike Quote
jj'sbassinforfun Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 A true XF action is unnecessary. And stiffness in the tip doesn't add extra feel in my experience. Tie on a 1/2 ounce SB to a moderate action. Then tie the same SB to a fast action. Let the SB hang and bounce the rod. That's what I mean by feel. ExFast should be stiffer or not bounce as much. No? Is one really better than the other for a reason or is it just preference? If you read my post I said "in my experience". So yes, it is my preference to not use a "true" Extra Fast action rod for spinnerbait usage. On retrieval techniques, I prefer there to be some give so I am not completely manipulating the bait with the very top section of my rod. On a seperate note, all manufacturers assign rod ratings at their own will. There is no industry standard for what fast, extra fast, and mod fast truly are. A graph of degrees of deflection under varying loads will give a much better representation of a rods behavior. Quote

ExFast should be stiffer or not bounce as much. No? You realize that you are describing action not feel right? There is no debate that an XF rod is stiffer in the tip than a Moderate action rod. To say that a rods action is directly correlated to its feel is flat out wrong. How much feel a rod has is dictated by a number of variables and can be interpreted differently depending on the user. Maico1 Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 No input on the GL2 but have experience with the SBR 812C and the SBR 752C. The difference between the two is 6 inches and I would go with the 752 at 6'3". In fact it is one of my favorite sticks, great accuracy in close or it will launch when needed. For a shorter stick it will go head to head with the 812 with plenty of backbone and is great for using the underhand cast. My 812 has a Calais 100A and the 752 has a Antares AR mounted on them and I think you can figure out which one gets the nod....... Quote
