Dixon Posted July 16, 2010 Author Posted July 16, 2010 Now do you guys try to throw all up into the grass or on the outskirts of it. Im guessing if your throwing into the grass you need heavy line. Set up? Quote
BassinTx Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 When I'm throwing into thick matted grass I ALWAYS use braid. I also use a 7' 3" - 7' 6" Heavy action rod with a high speed reel. But that is my own personal preference. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted July 16, 2010 Super User Posted July 16, 2010 If it's matted, I like to punch through with an appropriate sized tungsten weight and a small plastic. Something like a BB Cricket or an Ugly Otter. Rage craws and baby rage craws are really effective as well. If I'm working the edges of a mat, I'll use a frog in the mornings on the sparser grass then switch over to something like a swim jig as the day progresses. As far as line and gear goes, I use 30lb to 40lb braid, other guys use heavier. If the fish are being finicky, I'll tie on a fluoro leader. When I'm punching, I'll use a decent flippin stick no leader. On the outside edges you can get away with almost any rod, as long as it's got some backbone to stop the fish from turning into the grass. Reels are personal preference. I've got a 6.4 and a 7.1 that I use around grass. Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 17, 2010 Super User Posted July 17, 2010 The most effective grass jig made is a Terry Oldham's Eye-Max Jig & is what I flip/pitch/punch grass. Favorite weight depends on type of cover and denseness of cover Trailers Gene Larew Salty Hawg Craws & a variety of Rage Tail I carry a lot of Black-N-Blue, Black Neon, & June Bug Blue Claw Quote
