Made My First Two Batches Of Plastics - Pics Inside

I started by making 2 molds out of plaster with various lures I had laying around.  I think it turned out pretty decent for the first time but I need to clean up the pours a little bit and get better at trimming the lures.  I also damaged some of the arms on the craws trying to pull them out of the molds.  I did have vaseline in the cavity's, it was just a tight squeeze.  I think for my next molds, I will pick my favorite two and make like a 3 or 4 craw mold and possibly a trick worm and shrimp mold.  the Fluke turned out difficult due to the tail.  Also, when I underpoured the first one, it made the lure concave on one side.  The white ones I overpoured and had to trim a lot.

I fish saltwater a lot.  Couldn't figure out how to do one with the legs and antennae so I opted for a legless one.  Put it on a popping cork and something will hit it.  I bought some glitter and some more plaster to make some better molds now that I have my feet wet.  Going to take my 3 favorite ones out of this group and make a mold that can make 5 or 6 lures at one time of the same lure.

They look good for your first time, mine looked worse! 

 

If they are deforming when you are demolding then you are demolding way too early. Plaster molds take a bit of cooling before you can demold. 

 

One suggestion I have is to lose the vaseline and use pam spray if you need it. Did you cure your molds with elmers/water? Lots of info out there on how to seal a POP mold. If sealed properly you shouldnt need to spray it with anything. 

 

You are on the right track though. Every time you pour you will get better at it!

I have several that I sealed with finger nail polish.  It works very well I just have to touch them up every once in awhile. I make two part molds and some of the baits I have poured looked store bought, its just like Kevin said the more you do the better you will get.  Keep up the good work buddy!

I to have tried at making homemade worms,i made a 10 inch worm out of clay and made a mold from plaster ,the only problem is that the plastic that sits in the mold ,does not come out shiney like store bought baits,what can I do to get it to shine ?

Add a little vegetable oil to your mold. Some fish attractants have water bases and will make your plastic bubble on contact. If your baits are not sticking to the mold you can always add the fish attractant in the bag you re going to put your baits in. That will make them shine when you use them.
