Missouribassman95 Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 I've caught more fish on a roostertail but I get really frustrated when the blade doesn't spin correctley. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted July 15, 2010 Super User Posted July 15, 2010 Mepps spin better and catch more fish. Panther martins rule both though. Quote

Bassin_MO Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Mepps spin better and catch more fish. Panther martins rule both though. This^^ I don't care much for Rooster Tails. I mean, I know they can catch fish, but as the OP said, waaay too many blade hang ups. Panther Martins rock! I just posted the same thing in a Smallmouth Bass thread. I've caught more SM on a Panther Martin in small rivers and creeks than any other lure combined. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted July 16, 2010 Super User Posted July 16, 2010 I've caught more fish on a roostertail but I get really frustrated when the blade doesn't spin correctley. I think the Mepps is probably the better bait...but I use mostly Roostertails due to a significant price advantage over the Mepps at Wallyworld. I make two mods to the Roostertail - I bend over the line tie (similar to a Shyster) to reduce line twist, and I bend the tip of the blade outward - this gets better action on the blade. See the photo... Quote

Super User NorcalBassin Posted July 16, 2010 Super User Posted July 16, 2010 I've had RT's not spin right out of the package... will not buy another anytime soon (although I like Goose's idea). As stated already, Mepps are a good bet but PM's are even better. Quote
CRFisher Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 Rooster Tails never spin well for me. Mepps are far superior in my opinion. Panther Martins and Vibraxs are as well. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted July 16, 2010 Super User Posted July 16, 2010 I'll have to try that! Give it a go - I think you'll be surprised at the difference that little bend at the end of the blade will make Quote
Gorgebassman Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 I would say none of the above I use with best results and I have tried them all is a blue fox. Quote
CRFisher Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 Terminators inline is very well made. I think there are about 5 or 6 options out there better than a rooster tail. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted July 16, 2010 Super User Posted July 16, 2010 Panther martins are my top producing river smallie lure as well. Blue Fox Vibrax are good too. Quote

Super User Goose52 Posted July 16, 2010 Super User Posted July 16, 2010 Thanks for the tip bud! You bet! $2.36 at Walmart, and about 15 seconds of labor, and you have a pretty good bait. Quote

See the photo... How are you making the blade bend? A pair of pliers? Yep. I know it's hard to see in the photo (I edited the photo to put red arrows next to the mods) but you only need to bend just a bit of the tip of the blade to get the improved action. I mod the bait as soon as I take it out of the package - then tweak it lakeside if I need to. If you feel too much drag on the bait - you've got too much bend; if you don't get a good flutter from the blade, or it "stalls" too easy, then you don't have enough bend. Quote

Super User Raul Posted July 16, 2010 Super User Posted July 16, 2010 I 've owned Mepps, Blue Fox and Rooster tail, actually I 've only owned a couple of rooster tails, IMO ---> rooster tails = El Cheapo ( cheaply made ) and you can 't expect the greatest performance from El Cheapo, I 'll take a Mepps or a Blue Fox over a Rooster Tail any time.
