I have noticed (and entered) quite a few giveaways from the BR facebook page. I was wondering why you don't do giveaways for the forum users here, I am sure a lot of people do not use facebook?

Just wondering is all.

The problem is that people are eating it up right now, and until the "next best thing" comes out facebook will still be kicking. Social media has become huge for business owners and, I hate to say it, but I don't see changing until facebook has a legit competitor.

I like that BR has a facebook page with giveaways, though I never win I still like entering and I like seeing the articles they post since I may miss them on the main site.

Despite my (negative) post about Facebook in a recent BR thread, I actually just created an FB page so I could enter the BR contests.  It's kinda fun so far...I guess.  I'm friends with my Mom and a guy I used to skate with.  There's no one else I really want to bother with.  Oh, and of course I found Bass Resource on there and 'liked' them.

But isn't this site our "Facebook" for fishing, without having to deal with the crap that comes with it. I sure wish some of the contests would be on here as well. But I respect Glenn's decision to promote whatever he wants; just don't agree with it.

Like it or not, Facebook brings BassResource.com to more anglers.

Yep. I don't get the anti-FB stuff. You have COMPLETE control over who sees your page, who your friends are, what you "like", etc.

I especially chuckle at the "they are watching me" crowd.

^^ 100% ^^

In fact less control on BR, every member can see all posts.

The subject matter is limitless on FB, it's one stop shopping for as many interests as one may have.  You can even have your own group, set your own policy and have the group open or be selective on who can join.

When push comes to shove, both FB and BR are social media,  they are pretty much the same.

Fact is, for every member who signs up here, there are thousands who don't. They're content with just reading the content.  Some of them will even say, "Why should I sign up here when I already have Facebook?"  Some folks have both.  Some hate forums and others hate Facebook.

To put another way, when contacting a company's customer service department, some people use email, others would rather call, while still others like to take care of issues face-to-face.  Everyone is different, hence the reason why companies offer multiple methods for contacting them.

Facebook is no different.  It's just another way for our visitors to keep in touch and interact with BassResource.  So it's not an either/or thing, nor do you need to have both.

Hope that helps!

Glenn

I've used FB for years to keep touch with friends & family scattered around the world, and even tough my son works for FB I don't care for the GUI functionally of my page and some other things about FB; therefore I am very cautious about what I put on FB.  But with that said, I'm on FB many times a day, every day.

IMHO, As for BR on FB, I have little or no use for it.  To me it's more about direct and indirect advertising with some articles and a only few member posts.  I feel it's less about or for the members to freely communicate.  To me, you can't beat BassResource.com

Did you know that when you post a picture, be it private or public, and a friend "likes" it, the picture will show up on everyone on their friends list's feed? So you really do not have any control on who sees your pictures/posts. Also, way down in the user agreement it says facebook has complete control on everything you upload/post. If they deem necessary they can share it with whoever they want. You do not own anything you upload or put on your facebook page.

Dammit!  I forgot my foil hat again today!!!!!!!

Seriously though, I wouldnt post anything on there that I wouldnt want to share anyway. No big deal for me....I've received more than enough "compensation" from posting stuff on FB to make it worth my while.

I hope FB doesn't tell the government how many fish I catch, or show the IRS pictures of my cat.

Here's the deal with Facebook, if you post pictures of your children, your an idiot. If you constantly post your whereabouts as you take your kids for an ice cream, then to the mall, your an idiot. If your posting pics of your lunker, or anything innocuous, that's ok. If you open an account to keep up with things pertaining to your hobby, ok. If you open an account to advertise your business, good.

I wish we didnt have to share everything to be entered into the contest. I hate when people over share things, and i usually end up hiding their posts from my feeds. So because of that i dont want to flood peoples walls with shares.

I post status updates every time I hit the plastic outhouse. People are so interested in what I'm doing, so I give them what they want! **** to talk about! :D

Then choose "myself only" when you click share.  Defeats the purpose of sharing, but if your that worried....

You can also create lists, with specific themes.  I have a fishing list, and share things fishing related with that list.

As far as posting pictures of my kids...I'm wondering which one of my close friends that actually can see them will kidnap them.

If you actually spend some time in the security settings, you'll see that you can lock your wall down pretty tight - including not allowing your pics to come up in your friends feed when they like them.  Location meta data can be hidden, tagged pictures can be set so that you have to approve them before they appear on your wall, heck, anything posted on my wall is subject to review, and not visible to anyone but myself and the person that posted it.

and every person that works for Facebook. Once you open an account or post something, its their's, forever. you cannot delete your account, merely deactivate it.

and there are ways to get into private accounts, many people know how to do it. I'm not starting a peeing contest, just saying my opinion is that no matter how secure they say you are, your not.
