CTGalloway21 Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 I broke my Wright & Mcgill Rick Clunn S-Glass this weekend. I am needing a new rod. Is it necessary to have a crankbait rod if you are not fishing deep divers? Say I only go up to Bandit 300's in size. This is easily manageable on a regular rod. I know the Little John DD's and Bandit Ledge's are a little heavier and it is nice with a crankbait rod, but I fish from a kayak and hardly fish deeper water where those are necessary. I am considering *** Black Powell Inferno Ugly Stik GX2 Any other rods I should look at in the 100 range? I am thinking of not getting a crankbait specific rod since I don't throw deep ones often. Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 15, 2013 Global Moderator Posted July 15, 2013 BPS cranking stick is a great rod and you'll have money to buy a couple cranks with that $100 left over 2 Quote
Super User tomustang Posted July 15, 2013 Super User Posted July 15, 2013 Deep, shallow, and everything in between I use a 7ft medium heavy crankbait rod. Usually spec'd to 10-20lb line, 3/8-1oz. In the $100 range there's the $90 shimano clarus crankbait mhm has a lifetime warranty. St croix mojo bass and premier crankbait rods $100-120. BPS cranking stick are a bargain when they're on sale. Arv Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 I'm selling a Powell Endurance 695cb in the fleamarket for about what you are looking to spend. It normally retails for 170 and Powell is jacking the price up to 200 for 2104. I also fish from a kayak so I don't throw any deep divers. Its a great rod for squarebills and lipless crankbaits but also does a good job with other reaction lures. Quote

georgeyew Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 I broke my Wright & Mcgill Rick Clunn S-Glass this weekend. How did you break that rod? The fiberglass rods are suppose to be close to impossible to break. I have a Rick Clunn rod too, that is why I am curious. Quote

I have a Rick Clunn rod too, that is why I am curious. it was really weird. Me and a bud were fishing Weiss Lake from kayaks. He passed a pier and something broke him off. I followed and was fishing a Bandit 200 crankbait. I hit something hard and set the hook and whatever it was completely sliced my line and popped my rod. I think it had to be something sharp like metal or a rock. Next cast, it completely broke. I didn't pay much for it so it is not worth the $30 warranty and $20 shipping to replace it. I can get a new one for cheaper than that. I am going to get a *** Black Heavy 7'1" rod next. Quote
Skeeterboy1 Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 Have you checked out the Abu Garcia Veritas Rods? The "Winch" model is designed for crankbait fishing. They are lightweight and and well balanced and extremely sensitive because of the Abu designed extreme exposure reel seat. They come in a 7' medium and a 7' 6" medium heavy to cover either a shallow of deep diving crankbait. http://www.abugarcia.com/products/rods/veritas I hope this helps you next time out on the water.
