jason41987 Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 i bought this reel from walmart two weeks ago, its my first baitcaster but its called an abu garcia 5600WS... holds 135 yards of 12lb test... does anyone have any clue what this reel is, why they made it, what niche its supposed to fill.. anything? i cant find it anywhere online or on their website could someone tell me the length of a 5600C3 or C4 from the outside surfaces of both side plates, as well as the diameter of one of those sideplates? id like to compare it with this 5600WS and see the difference in physical size Quote

The WS is the same basic design and bearing count as the 5600c4, just less the palming plate line clicker and, the spool design. I would assume the demensions are basically the same between the reels.. Tight Lines! Quote
jason41987 Posted July 15, 2013 Author Posted July 15, 2013 well this reel 5600WS holds 135 yards of 12lb test and the 5600C4 holds 205 yards of 12lb test.. so why would the C4 hold that much more?.. does it have a bigger spool that still fits in the same general frame? it was also about $20 cheaper... im wondering if a 5600C4 (i think 6600 models are way too wide and large for general purpose usage).. i wonder if the feel would be the same Quote
0119 Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 Yes the wiffle spool is similar to the Record's spool. It has a larger arbor portion to afford the drilled out ports. I use 4600 size Ambassadeurs every day, in saltwater and have not ever come close to being spooled of less line than that. The wiffle spool should provide plenty of line for bass or any other fish it was designed for. 1 Quote
jason41987 Posted July 15, 2013 Author Posted July 15, 2013 ok.. so this is basically just a 5600C4 with a wiffle spool which does decrease line capacity, but physically this probably uses the same frame and sideplates, and internals of a 5600c4.. reguardless, i have to find a 5600C4 left handed model to replace it.. i recon i could transfer the spool over but i dont know what that would gain.. some of the gears in this reel look plastic though Quote
0119 Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 That's just the idler gears and they are plastic in all makes. Its to insure they break before your finger does if it get caught in the levelwind according to a shimano rep. Either way for there function they don't need to be metal. 1 Quote
BradH Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 That WS reel is fine the way it is. The spool diameter is larger to reduce line capacity, you pretty much answered your own question. It's a great reel for baits on the large end of the bass spectrum and up from there. Use it and enjoy! Quote

tholmes Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 I have a 5600WS and it's a fine reel. Like most Swedish Ambassadeurs, it's solid, strong and reliable. External dimensions are the same as virtually every other 5000 series ABU reel made since 1980. I use mine mostly for t-rigs, c-rigs and jigs. The "Whiffle Spool" makes it more adept at casting lighter baits than a standars spool, and the reduced line capacity has never been an issue for me. Tom 1 Quote
jason41987 Posted July 24, 2013 Author Posted July 24, 2013 i actually got a response back from an abu garcia representative on the 5600WS.. and they told me this is a walmart exclusive that is actually a 5600C4 with the only difference over the standard 5600C4 being that wiffle spool, and that in fact, if i wanted a full 5600C4 i could just buy the C4 spool and install it.. but im fine, i like my reel the way it is and im quite happy with it, and now that i know its a 5600C4 i can look into some mods for it in terms of gears, bearings... i believe this thing reels in 30" per turn... wasnt sure how i would like the high speed reels but after getting used to them i think i prefer them, i can reel a spoon in faster if im going for a pike as i can be certain a pike can swim 30" faster than i can turn the spool Quote
BassResource.com Advertiser FD. Posted July 25, 2013 BassResource.com Advertiser Posted July 25, 2013 I have two 5600's that I use for light salt water gear. I use my Revo's in fresh water. Quote
