Kevin22 Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 Can you guys recommend a good line for topwater walk the dog type baits? I want mono for sure. I am currently using 17# stren original Since I am throwing the little 3.5" sammy style and not the 4.5" version I think I want to downsize to 14lb so I can get more line on the reel, with the smaller bait I should be alright with a lighter line right? . With a couple casts today I was within 20' of my backing at the end of the cast. Would 14# be suitable or should I stick with 17? Although the stren is doing the job, I feel that since there is quite a bit of memory to it that I am not getting the best action out of the lure. What mono's do you guys like for walking baits? Super User iabass8 Posted July 14, 2013 Super User Posted July 14, 2013 i throw sammies and spooks on 15# for the occasion fish run me into weeds on weed lines. if it were all open water i'd be using 12. i use trilene xl. my top water rod is a ltb68mxf so the stretch the line gives compensates for the xf tip. Diggy Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 I had great luck with suffix elite 14lb, it casts well. Suffix siege has more abrasion resistance if needed. I also like Trilene XL, havent used the xt but I heard its good also. Quote
Indiana Bass1 Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 12 lb Suffix siege has been working great for me on buzz baits and spooks. Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted July 14, 2013 Super User Posted July 14, 2013 The Sufix monos are great. I prefer the Elite but both are really good. Quote
Super User MCS Posted July 14, 2013 Super User Posted July 14, 2013 Use sufix elite for my top water, seige is a great line as well. I use it on another setup. Quote
Stren_g Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 I use stren brute strength 12#. I'm partial though bc my parents named me after the company lol Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted July 14, 2013 Super User Posted July 14, 2013 I would second the folks that mentioned Trilene XL and suffix siege. I have both rigged up right now. I prefer 10-12# as I typically fish these baits on "edges" of rip rap, weed lines, points, and over submerged islands. Seems to do well with pop and walking style topwater baits. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 14, 2013 Global Moderator Posted July 14, 2013 14lb Mustad Ultra Line for me, can't break the stuff and very abrasion resistant. Plus a local camping store sells the 1lb spools of it for $10 apiece for some reason It's something like 5,000 yards of line on a spool of 14lb I think. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted July 14, 2013 Global Moderator Posted July 14, 2013 IF I'm gonna use mono, I use 10# Big Game. Mike Quote
buzzfrog Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 Triline and big game are great lines, but IMO suffix siege- elite is the bomb. Very happy with it. Use it on my TW hard bait and my buzz bait rod 1 Quote
JROC Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 I use power pro super slick in 65# test with a leader of mono 15# bG Quote
Kevin22 Posted July 14, 2013 Author Posted July 14, 2013 Hit up dicks for some line. Got some seaguar red label for $6, sufix siege for $5 and I grabbed three 1/4lb spools of big game for $5 a spool. Quote
