TWMstr Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Abu Garcia Black Max 7' Med/Heavy Action Rod Abu Garcia Black Max Low Pro 6.4:1 Reel 10lb Mono/17lb Fluoro Leader 3/8 ounce Jig Will this setup work? Also how do you fish a jig in heavy grass. Once it hits the bottom its out of sight, and when you get ready to work it you have to struggle to pop it out of the grass. Is jig fishing only for sandy and rock bottoms? Need some help. Thanks guys. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted July 12, 2013 Super User Posted July 12, 2013 Ya it will work my only question is why would you go mono to fluoro in a leader? If your fishing grass you need a jig with a thin profile to rip through the grass. The North Star Flip n Swim or original swim jig would be your meal ticket. The rounded head of a football or wider head of a flipping jig will get hung up easily in the grass. You nailed it on technique. Just let it fall and work it on the bottom. You will need to give it a hard pop to rip it through. Also tske the swim jig and burn it over the grass. Quote
TWMstr Posted July 13, 2013 Author Posted July 13, 2013 Well I don't have the money for braided line. Will mono work? Because I know it stretches. Super User rockchalk06 Posted July 13, 2013 Super User Posted July 13, 2013 Mono will work fine for it. Unless you need the Fluoro for abrasion resistance, I really can't see a need for a fluoro leader attached to mono. Even if you have a fluoro leader, your still gonna get plenty of stretch with the main line being mono. If you have and can afford fluoro, braid shouldn't be to hard to afford. If you have fluoro, I'd use it as a main line over mono m Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted July 13, 2013 Super User Posted July 13, 2013 IMO 10 lb mono is a little light for throwing a 3/8 oz jig in vegetation. You might be better served with 14 or 17 fluorocarbon or a medium weight braid/fluorocarbon leader. I think that your rod/reel combo is fine and will do the job. Of course the reel doesn't say Shimano on it, but according to your profile you are still young and you will gain a greater appreciation of quality as you age. Quote
