Drop Shot Braid Or Fluoro

I have started fishing the drop shot and I have had some success on it. Right now I am using 8lb Trilene XL mono and I want to step it up. My one question is should I get braid or fluorocarbon. My setup is a Pflueger Supreme with a 6' 9" Medium Light Fast action Fenwick EliteTech Smallmouth.

 

I will also use this setup for senkos and shakey heads or anything else that is finesse.

if water is super clear try 6 lb fluro .... if its not super clear go with 8 lb fluro... I always use flouro when dropshotting.

I use straight 8lb fluorocarbon for drop shot as well as senkos and shakey heads.

I agree with hooligan... 10# or 12# braid with a lighter flouro leader of your choice.

Another vote for both.  10lb braid with an 8lb FC leader.

In the RichZ camp, straight fluoro is the only acceptable line for drop shotting - off shore. And he would never consider using a swivel between the main line and the drop shot hook. Well, I'll tell you, I respect the man and his philosophy tremendously. For many years, I adhered to it religiously. But many friends of mine have made the switch to braid with a fluoro leader - and quite successfully I might add.

 

So, this season (my 12th. drop shotting), I've switched to 10# test PP as my main line. Then I add a small #8 Spro PowerSwivel. To that I attach my fluoro drop shot leader. A few weeks ago I made a trip up to the Quabbin Res. here in MA and did pretty well with this set-up. I'm thinking I may have something valuable here. Of course I'll need more time to properly evaluate, but it does look promising. JMO.

10lb Nanofil with 8lb flouro leader directly attached.  This is how almost all of my spinning rods are set up any more and it's worked out awesome.

10# Powerpro with a 12'-18' leader of 6# or 8# P-Line Halo is what I do on my drop shot set-ups. No swivel required.

Out of curiousity how much space do you leave between the swivel and the hook?

I just finished a trip to Erie and did nothing but drop shot. I was always a mono guy but this year I stepped it up! I used the new SX-1 braid in 10# with 6# fluro leader attached by using the Albright knot! I would have around a 8' leader then I use vmc dropshot hook. This system worked very well for me and made the sensitivity of my rod go through the roof! I caught numerous fish in the 3# class with a few over 4# and did not have any problems. Use what you like because if you try stuff you are not comfortable with you will worry about your line and not what is going on under the water!

My set up is consistent with Crestliner. Power Pro Super Slick, the smallest black barrel swivel I can get away with and #8 flouro leader. For those interested, my leaders are about 32 inches long and I pre tie them by the dozen.  I run my bait about 8 inches from the weight so it's further from the swivel. So far this has been very effective and line twist is greatly reduced, which is nice. This is one of the few applications where braid seems to have an advantage, seeing I use a swivel regardless.

I've been using 6# FC for drop shot but mostly just wacky rigged senkos. Rod is too noodley for shaky head can't get a hook set. Anyhow I literally have 40 break offs at a time. All that tension stretches the line to its max can't possibly good for the spool. After today I gotta find a new way that's cheaper I can't buy a spool of Invizx every outing. Tourney or not. Plus I have a few spools with like 20 yards apiece of FC laying around. Would 20# braid and a foot or 2 of leader FC be better? Like I said 9/10 I'm throwing straight senko wacky rigged.

I use pretty much the same rule for any terminal rig: braid for weeds, fluoro for rocks. If you're concerned about line visibility, use a leader with braid.

Naaa, guy it won't work! Send all you're partial spools of FC To me, I will implement my plan which is similar to your plan. I will report back to you!!! Heeeeheee..... Yea guy sounds smart to me! Tight lines!
