Super User rippin-lips Posted July 11, 2013 Super User Posted July 11, 2013 Any of you steez guys upgraded the stock spool bearings to boca orange seal abec 7's Was it a noticeable difference and worth the money? Also any other good performance enhancing upgrades such as a different spool? The reel is super nice and feels very solid but as far as casting I wasn't blown away by it. I think my zillion does just as good of a job if not a tad better. Thanks for any input BR Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted July 13, 2013 Author Super User Posted July 13, 2013 Added a drop of tri flow to each spool bearing and distance has gotten a lot better and now I had to up the brake settings. Before I was throwing a senko on 4/0 Gamakatsu super line hook with a 3/16 tungsten weight and my brakes on 3-4. Quote
bassinbrian Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Glad its working out for you! I love my steezs Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted July 14, 2013 Author Super User Posted July 14, 2013 Glad its working out for you! I love my steezs Yeah it's an awesome reel I was just kinda sad at first it wasn't casting as will as my zillion. It's fixed now. Wish it was 7:1 but I guess I have to fork out for the ex if I want that. Quote
Silas Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 You need to fish with it a bit longer. It gets better. I know my 2 did. I thought about an upgrade in bearings but I realize it would not be worth the effort for the gain in THAT particular reel. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted July 14, 2013 Author Super User Posted July 14, 2013 Yeah a drop of oil made a big difference. I'm happy with it now. It's paired with a powell endurance 723 and it's just a joy to fish. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 The steez like any other reel will benefit from properly flushing and oiling the bearings. Beyond that upgrading them will gain you slightly more. Quote

They work but not as nice as I'd like. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 Ya, I've had those but don't like them. They don't push straight and can bend pins that are extra tight. Dawn at Smooth Drag was selling a good tool but they're $35. Quote
Mikey Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 to me the Steez is perfect as it comes at the price point I expect it to be so & it is !!!!!!!!!! love mine ir's a masterpiece !! Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted July 17, 2013 Author Super User Posted July 17, 2013 I decided to get a set of boca orange seal abec 7's for it and I grabbed the hedgehog studios spool pin tool. Lets see how it does now. Quote
Quitlimpin Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 The hedgehog tool is the way to go. It's super easy to use and not much more expensive than the Boca pliers. A lot of guys have had great success with the T3 1016 spool in the Steez. It might be worth a look. Quote

I know the 103 is for lighter baits and people change the spools in them. I'll search it a bit. Quote
Quitlimpin Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Didn't even think about that. According to tackletrap's website it will fit a Steez 100. Shoot em an email. They usually respond very quickly. Quote

I'll call tomorrow. Thanks for the tip though. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted July 18, 2013 Author Super User Posted July 18, 2013 Went with the 1016 spool after talking with them. Thanks for that info quitlimpin. They said it's just a great overall upgrade for the steez all around. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted July 18, 2013 Super User Posted July 18, 2013 You wont be dissapointed in that spool. I know a few guys that use them and the performance gain was worth it. Quote

Super User rippin-lips Posted July 22, 2013 Author Super User Posted July 22, 2013 1016 spool arrived on Saturday. Tamed the reel alot and was a great upgrade. Can't wait till the boca bearings arrive. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted July 23, 2013 Author Super User Posted July 23, 2013 Bearings came today. Put them in and made a few casts in the yard. It woke the reel up. Gained about 5-8yrds casting a senko with 3/16th weight. I'm interested in putting the stock spool back in to see which upgrade was the best bang for my buck. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted July 23, 2013 Super User Posted July 23, 2013 Thanks for the update. Can't wait to hear what combination of upgrades you like best. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted July 23, 2013 Author Super User Posted July 23, 2013 I don't feel the 1016 spool gained me any distance but it's smoother to throw and calmed the reel down. Didn't have to be as on it with your thumb when setting the brakes low '2 for me' I'm assuming this is because it's lighter but idk 100% The bearings gave added distance. Now if it's just because of the lighter spool idk that either. I also have #50 power pro on the 1016 and #14 Sunline sniper FC on the stock spool. One day when I'm bored I'll compare them and take actual distance measurements using the same line on each. Quote
