Bps Pro Qualifier Reel Problem

OK been loving my BPS pro qualifier, got is on sale this year when it was $80. So for its been the best $80 reel ever. Fishing on Tuesday night and set the hook on my Flash Mob Jr and the handle got tight all of sudden. fished with it some more but just to much of a pain to fish with being tight when reeling in. Took it to a local repair store here was the diagnosis. A bearing was slipping that it moved close up to the handle and that's what made it tight. He said he was able to slide it back down but didnt know ho long that would last until it worked it way back up again. Other than that he didnt know what else to do.

 

I know everyone sings the praises of the BPS PQ reel on this board and so far i had been one of them, so anyone else have an issue like this? Seems like maybe a spacer or something might be needed? Ideas? I haven't picked the reel up yet, but he told me how to fix it if it happens again.

 

Am i asking to much of my reel to use it as my Flash mob Jr Reel maybe?

I had the same thing happen with a Lews TS last year. Fixed it and it has not been a problem since.

Yea i was having trouble hearing him over the phone but in short thats what i got. I'll pick it up tomorrow and get better details.

 

Thats my plan keep using it see what happens if it happens again i'll take it back to BPS.

This particular problem can be solved by purchasing reels that say  Shimano on them.  Some of my Shimano reels are 10 + years old.  They still work good.  Buying quality is always a good idea.

It sounds like the one way roller bearing moved up slightly and started rubbing on the handle. It should be pressed into place and shouldn't move like that.  I would try fishing with it and see if it does it again, it may or may not. If it does just take it back to BPS and they will replace it with a new one. Hopefully it won't move again on you.

I've seen this with reels that have been taken apart but never just from being used. If the AR slides into the frame too easily a wrap of Teflon tape will snug it up.

I had the handel tighten up on my pq try tearing it down and cleaning and oiling it that fixed the problem for me.

That sounds like what happened to a couple of Tourney Specials I had a few years back.

BPS will stand behind the reel.

 

I would suggest trading it in and moving up the ladder to a different brand.

 

I had a Johnny Morris fail during the first time I used in on a tournament on Smith Mountain Lake six years ago and finally purchased another Johnny Morris for a special crankbait setup on a very old rod.

 

Otherwise, I stay away from the BPS reels.

 

Does anyone out there know who is making the reels for BPS? At one time it was Browning but I read a few years ago that it is another company.

I would just take it back, and get it replaced. PQ are great reels at a great price point. All reel brands have problems from time to time, it's a manufactured product. I still have several of the older generation of them that work great still today.

I pick it up today. So i'll see how it lasts. I have had good luck with BPS reels in the past. Agree they all cant be perfect things happen, if this problem keeps on i'll just go trade it back in.

i stay away from BPS reels altogether. when i bought my pflueger supreme spinning reel earlier this year my uncle was right next to me. he asked why i would pay a $100 for it instead of just buying "this" and he picked up a some little gold colored BPS reel. i proceeded to show him how much smoother the supreme was to the bps reel and he agreed. despite being wealthy, he still didnt want to pay the $100 for the reel, and proceeded to buy a johnny morris spinning reel over even the pflueger president i and the salesman recommended to him that was the same price as the JM reel. the JM reel was one of those with a narrow in height but deep spools, and the salesmen even told him it gave people problems casting once they got even a little low on line. all my uncle cared about was the lifetime warranty on the JM reel, i said yeah youll need it, thats why i got a reel that will last a lifetime with proper care. he had no response. now, my point isnt to trash bps reels as plenty seem to be happy with them, but i think there are much better options for comparable reels in the same price range as the BPS reels...

The Pro Qualifier has a history of being a quality reel for the money. I have 4 with many hours of use over several years with minimal maintenance. I do not hesitate to recommend them. Bass Pro also has a long history of quality customer service. I would expect your reel to perform well for years to come.

BPS is fantastic with their reel service.

 

Twice I have had to return a PQ, and one issue was clearly my fault and the other was just an odd issue. Both times, NO questions asked at all, they just shook their head yes and said go grab another "it's your's". 

 

I have two Johnny Morris Sig 2's for cast/retrieve rods because they are so d**n smooth and because of BPS' reel service. Any other contact reel I have is a Lews, due to the lower profile.

The PQ is hands down the best reel you can buy for $100, but if you can get one during their sale it's a steal. You can even argue the Johnny Morris Sig 2 is one of the best reels you can get for $150.

Good news is when I picked up my reel since the repair said he couldn't fix it. No charge! He just moved the bearing back into place. Reel feels great and if it happens again ill just take it back to bps. They all cant be perfect and even after my hiccup I still agree its a very good reel for the price and a steal when they are on sale.
