BuffaloBass716 Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 I want to get a new spinning rod & reel for next year, but im not really sure on what im buying. I only shore fish so id like something that can really cast far (maybe a 7' rod?) but I want something that can be fished with tons of different baits and lures and catch multiple species of fish, not just bass. I guess im trying to ask what would be a good rod and reel combo for all around fishing, being super versatile. I have no idea about the 'action' and gear ratio either. One last thing, I believe that you get what you pay for so Id like something thats not cheap, but not hundreds of dollars either. thanks for any advice! Quote

I mostly fish a river, there are alot of weeds close to shore but further out there is less and less because it gets much deeper. Id like to cast over most of the cover thats close to shore and since the river has a swift current, I use pretty heavy sinkers to help it stay on the bottom. Quote

There are a few on here such as SirSnookalot that fish both fresh and saltwater. You may need to be looking at Inshore saltwater rods. I have zilch experience with this kind of gear. Did a little searching just for giggles. A quick search turned up a Shimano Teramar TMS-F70H rated for 1/2-2 oz. at Cabela's...$109.99 Penn Prevail PRESF1220S90 is a 2-piece 9' rod rated for 3/4-3 oz. lures....$79.99 Tsunami Saphire Surf Rod line has an 8' and 9' both MH ranging from 3/4-3 and 1-4 respectively...$49.99 Redbone Hurricane line has a 7' MH rated 1-2 and a 7' XH rated 1-3. Do any of these rods sound like what you are looking for? A longer rod will yield longer casting distance...all else being equal...which isn't always the case. I have an older model Cabela's XLMTi 6'6" MH rated for 3/8 to either 2-1/4 or 2-1/2 oz. that I might be talked into selling. However, it would leave me with no rod capable of handling a 2 oz weight should I ever do any fishing that would require same. Mounted a reel on it, but don't think I ever made a cast with it. Quote

The definition of a heavy sinker can vary from person to person. I know you said you dont want something cheap nor something expensive...how much are you looking to spend? I think that will help to narrow it down (or not)..haha Quote

pbizzle Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 I'd find a penn spinfisher 450 or 460 ssg. I have one that I use for inshore fishing. It's too heavy for lake fishing, but it would be ok for river fishing. You can get one for about $60. Spool her up with 12 pound trilene XT and it would do just fine. Pick out your choice of rod. I use an ugly stik lite, but only since I don't use it much. You'll probably want something nicer. Quote

Had an idea a 1 oz. sinker would be more like what you needed for swift water. (I don't fish swift water.) For rod power, you should stick with a Heavy or Extra Heavy if it is a fresh water rod. I'd be interested in what rod you get, and how well it works for you. Also what kind of lures do you fish with that kind of weight? Don't think I would be using artificial lures if I had to fish under those conditions. Glad I don't have to. Quote
