Tying Line To Baitcast Reel?

We use the arbor knot to tie our line to the spool bar on our baitcast reels, however we can never get it tight..the center spool bar will rotate freely and not "grab" the line.

We can get it spooled with some initial aid by holding some slack then reeling it but if while fishing we were ever to run out of spool (which I'm sure will never happen) it wouldn't grab the bar tightly and we would be unable to reel the line back in.

With that I think we aren't tying it right? Is the line supposed to be tied tightly around the spool bar or is a loose hold normal? We've retied it over and over but can't get a nice tight hold. There are holes in the spool bar but I wasn't sure if those were to be used so we tied directly around the bar and not inside of the holes.

Learning all these knots has been one of the biggest pains.

I've tied through the "whiffle" holes with good results. Also you can use a piece of electrical tape around the spool and over your knot.

the arbor knot will work as I use that on reels without the holes, make sure that the tag end has a big enough knot to catch when you tighten the line. if your reels have the holes moisten it a lil when putting into the holes then turn the handle slowly the line will catch and the line will tighten up then you can spool the rest. I use this on a Berkley line winder so if you are spooling while on the pole may be a lil tougher.

You must be using braid.  Never had it happen in 60 years of fishing with mono.  Recently tried fluorocarbon and copoly lines.  No slip with them either.  Are you tying an overhand know in the end first?  If not, you can pull the line off the reel (knot won't hold).

 

When using braid either 1) use some mono backing, or 2) put tape around the spool.  No more line slipping.

Sounds like braid. The arbor knot should tighten down nicely to the spool. Before you do that, though, I would suggest wrapping your spool in black electricians tape. This should keep it from slipping.

I agree with the above posts.  I personally use masking tape, electrical tape works well too, whether it's b/c or spinning, and any kind of line I'm using.  I make 3 overhand knots and cinch it down, or just the tape over line method.  Better than even chance if you get spooled by a fish down to the knot, it's not going to hold anyway.

I'm actually using mono which leads me to believe I'm just tying the knot incorrectly. From the sound of it I could weave the line inside of one of the holes if I wanted but I need to know how to properly tie a knot.

Probably just poor knots on my end and I'm tying them wrong if it's supposed to be tight and stay tight.

There is an app for Android called fishing knots that shows hoe to tie all the knots I have ever heard of. Nice for me to have it portable, until of course I drop my phone overboard tying a ne knot.

Have you tried the Uni knot? Search youtube there's a good video of a guy putting mono on his baitcaster. I followed his instruction on mine and the thing's solid. 12# mono straight tied to the spool without going through the holes.
