Need Opinions On '94 Triton

Looking at buying my first bass boat. A friend down the road from me has a 1994 Triton Rick Clunn edition for sale. Runs and is in pretty decent shape. A little dull on the paint job and the carpet will need to be redone. But the engine runs good and all electronics lights work. Gonna get a mechanic to do a conpression test on it. Its a 60hp evinrude. My question is if the top end is good is $2, 000 a decent buy? Trailer and all comes with it. Any input would be apprciated!

If it all checks out I would say that sounds like a steal to me.  I would buy one in a heart beat if one popped up around here for that price.  I assume this is a 16-17 footer.  Motor may be a little weak if it is 17ft but should get the job done.

It's a 16 ft. The only problem is the carpet's. But I can just pull that up and redo the entire boat. Paint's dull but that's expected out of a boat that age. I have pic's of it but cant seem to upload them from my phone?

It really depends on the motor .

 

 2 grand is pretty cheap unless it needs a lot of motor work.

If it does stay clear of it unless you either have budgeted for a lot of headaches and a lot of repair bills.

 

Marine mechanics don't come cheap when they start tearing down a motor.

I mean it runs and looks good. I was gonna get a compression check done by a mech. How else could I check or test the engine

Make sure you check the lower unit , make sure the prop shaft is straight , Make sure there's no water in the lower unit.

If he just replaced the oil you won't be able to tell unless the boat is run.

That boat is a Rick Clunn Edition Nitro. I've heard that those have had delamination issues.  I've also heard from quite a few people that with a 70 they can be a real dog.  Slow to plane and have a pretty rough ride, even compared to other 16ft boats.  Overall not a very good hull design. BUT for the right price I'd buy it.  That 70hp Evinrude/Johnson 3 cylinder is a bulletproof motor as long as its getting enough oil.  Just looking at the pictures I'd say expect to spend 1-1.5k more after you buy it.

I know this is going to be a kickin the nuts. But that's not that good of a price from that boat. I wouldn't own a mid 90's nitro. Around here you can find an older skeeter for a few hundy more with a 150 on it.

What do you think the $1,000-$1,500 would go into? If I bought it I'd replace the trolling motor, the carpet's right away. Before purchase I'd have a mechanic check compression and the lower end. For a first bass boat would this be an alright buy? I dont need a top dollar boat just something to learn on and start off that can get me on the water that I can work on it be a decent first boat. I appreciate all the feedback and honest opinions guy's.

If it was a Triton as in your original title I would buy it.  Being an early 90's Nitro I would not want it at any price.  They definitly had some issues with the early model Nitro boats.  One of the biggest issues is that it looks like it has just been left out in the weather which could mean rotton stringers and transon.  Major job to repair and difficult to check the stringers without gutting the hull.  You can check the transom by standing on the engine lower unit and watching for any movement in the transon. The plus side of this boat is that the Johnson-Evinrude motor if good is nearly worth the sellers asking price..  Those motors run forever.
